Bills’ Jerry Hughes ‘on schedule’ with offseason rehab

Buffalo Bills defensive end Jerry Hughes says his recovery is going well during the 2020 offseason.

Buffalo Bills defensive end Jerry Hughes might have naysayers, but there’s no way anyone can say he isn’t an ironman on the field. Currently the longest-tenured member of the team, Hughes has never missed a game in his Buffalo career since joining the team via trade in 2013.

Included in that is a 16-game full-season outing in 2019. But Hughes had his struggles on the field due to some injuries. While taking cover during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Hughes told the Buffalo News this week that he’s still taking the necessary steps as he recovers from offseason surgeries.

“Everything seems to be on track, going along well with my rehab. I’m still able to go to the facility four times a week, so I’m just moving along quite well,” Hughes said. “I’ve been talking with my trainers and what they’ve been telling the guys here in Houston is that I’m on schedule.”

The offseason surgeries that Hughes underwent include wrist and groin procedures. While Hughes did play in every game last year, he did cause a bit of a stir with his injuries. Following the season, Hughes posted to social media that he was undergoing that surgery on his wrist. That caused an NFL investigation because Hughes never appeared on the team’s injury reports throughout the season with the injury. Despite that investigation, the Bills were cleared of any wrongdoing.

In Hughes’s position group the Bills lost Shaq Lawson and added Mario Addison this offseason. Buffalo will hope Addison helps the Bills and Hughes cause more problems in opposing backfields next season. The upcoming 2020 NFL Draft could also see the addition of another pass rusher as well.
