Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane has done a heck of a job guiding the ship in Orchard Park. However, NFL.com sees some room for improvement.
Beane landed at the No. 12 overall spot. It’s the first time he appeared on the list as newcomers typically don’t, so he was not ranked in NFL.com’s list a year ago. Overall this year, 25 GMs were ranked.
Here’s why, explained by analyst Gregg Rosenthal:
This ranking may look high for a GM who has only been at the helm for two drafts, but I wanted to reward Beane and coach Sean McDermott for an archetypal rebuilding job. The Bills have had a vision of the type of players they want to draft (Tre’Davious White, Tremaine Edmunds and Devin Singletary among them) and the type of free agents they want to bring aboard, like center Mitch Morse and wideout John Brown. This year’s trade for Stefon Diggs was the perfect ante up for an organization that has addressed its biggest problems and is ready to compete now. I may disagree on their choice of quarterback, but there’s no denying that what the Bills brass has done is working.
While perhaps slightly knocked for naming Allen their franchise quarterback, most of the circumstances for Beane are out of his hands. Beane might be ranked higher here, had he held his job for longer. We’ll see if he improves his stock in the future, starting with the 2020 NFL Draft next week.
But there’s no doubt that Beane has certainly proven himself in a short time. He took a roster crafted by former GM Doug Whaley and coach Rex Ryan and completely flipped it, clearing out some of the tougher-to-swallow contracts as well.
In terms of the rest of the NFL, while the Patriots don’t have Tom Brady anymore, they do have Bill Belichick. He’s ranked No. 1, edging out the Chiefs’ Brett Veach and the Steelers’ Kevin Colbert, respectively.
