Vikings have been pretty solid at drafting players in the 7th round

The Vikings have three seventh-round picks in this year’s draft. History tells us that they’ll probably find a contributor.

The Vikings are loaded with three seventh-round picks in the 2020 NFL Draft.

While seventh-round picks are, well, seventh-round picks, the Vikings have actually done a pretty good job of finding players who can contribute late in the draft.

Since 2000, here’s a list of players who have been solid contributors to the Vikings and around the league:

  • 2019 – WR, Bisi Johnson
  • 2017 – DE, Ifeadi Odenigbo
  • 2016 – DE, Stephen Weatherly
  • 2016 – S, Jayron Kearse
  • 2014 – DT, Shamar Stephn
  • 2012 – LB, Audie Cole
  • 2009 – S, Jamarca Sanford
  • 2007 – QB, Tyler Thigpen

While these aren’t Pro Bowl caliber players, these have been contributors to team success as a starter, key backup or a special teams player.

With how thin Minnesota’s roster is as far as depth is concerned, Viking GM Rick Spielman would love to find a hidden gem (or three) in this year’s draft.

It’s also worth keeping an eye on how Spielman uses these picks as trade ammunitation. If there’s anything we know about Tricky Rick, it’s that he’s not afraid to wheel and deal on draft day.
