Former Ohio State forward Alonzo Gaffney has entered the transfer portal

Former Ohio State basketball forward Alonzo Gaffney has reportedly entered his name into the transfer portal per reports.

If you’ve been following the Ohio State men’s basketball team, you know that the departures this year have looked a lot like people running out of a burning building. Gone are D.J. Carton, Luther Muhammad, and Alonzo Gaffney. In the case of Gaffney, a 6-foot, 9-inch forward, early reports had his departure surrounding the possibility of hitting the professional ranks.

As of Thursday night however, that appears to have changed. According to a source close to 247Sports, Gaffney has now entered the transfer portal, meaning he is more likely to explore a departure to another program.

Gaffney came to Ohio State as a highly-recruited athlete with a ton of upside. During his freshman season however, he never really found a role with the team. The lack of meat on his frame, in combination with a talented potential that was still being developed, had him relegated to a deep role on the bench once Big Ten season began.

He averaged just 1.8 points and 1.4 rebounds in 6.8 minutes per contest last season, with much of that coming before conference play began.

At the tail-end of the season, it started to become clear that something was wrong. At first, illness was cited as a reason for his absence from the team, but as he continued to not travel and suit-up, mystery ensued.

Now, it appears as though we could see Gaffney with another program in college basketball in the not too distant future. As any further information becomes available, we’ll be on top of it.
