Former Alabama basketball star Collin Sexton sat down with USA Today’s Mackenzie Salmon to share how he and his team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, are handling the NBA’s hiatus due to the coronavirus.
Salmon asked Sexton what it was like being one of the NBA team told to self quarantine:
“I couldn’t leave the house for the next 5-6 days. They wanted to make sure we were good just because we had just played the Jazz.”
And when asked how he’s staying in shape and how is the team able to communicate, this is what Sexton had to say:
“I have weights in the house, workout bike, and then I found a gym to workout at every now and then, at least like 2-3 times a week just to get that feel, and just to get in the gym because it’s tough being in the house the whole time.”
Sexton is one of the many athletes in NBA who is not sure what’s next, but they can only hope for the best.
Before the NBA suspended play, Sexton was the 3rd leading scorer in the NBA for March, even ahead of Lebron James. He was also on pace to become the third player under 22 in Cavaliers history to average 20 points per game.
And in his last 4 games in March, he was averaging 30 points, 3.8 rebounds and four assists, and was shooting 47 percent from beyond the arc in his last 22 games.
Even Cavaliers’ head coach J.B. Bickerstaff is impressed with Sexton’s improvement and performance.
“You look at the plays he’s able to make now and the passes that he makes now — teams are going to have to make tough decisions. ‘Do we keep two guys on him?’ He’s making the right play now, He’s getting the ball to the popping bigs for 3’s and those types of things. He’s putting a ton of pressure on defenses from that standpoint and there’s a plan of attack that he’s playing with right now.”
Although there are many unknowns right now, one thing is for sure: Collin Sexton is just getting started, and his future is looking very bright.
