The Buffalo Bills and Cam Newton? It still seems far fetched, but with the news coming down on Tuesday that the Carolina Panthers would release their former first-overall pick, that connection has been made rather quickly.
ESPN NFL Insider Dan Graziano was discussing the latest updates on the quarterback. With the QB looking for a new home, he went down the line of potential landing spots.
While not connecting or reporting that the Bills are interested in Newton, there was a mention of Buffalo and why it could make sense. He laid out many of the obvious reasons via Sean McDermott and Brandon Beane, but there’s a Josh Allen notion as well.
“Someone mentioned to me this morning the Buffalo Bills [as a potential speculated landing spot]. Josh Allen is there, similar type of skill set, how they use him in the run game,” Graziano said.

While Allen was compared to the likes of Newton pre-draft, and even after the Bills took him. That idea of taking Newton would be a mistake.
On the plus side, Newton would be a more experienced backup for the Bills than current No. 2 Matt Barkley. Newton has seen action in 125 career games to Barkley’s 14. Heck, even Allen has started 28 games already. Plus, Newton has a Super Bowl appearance and MVP Award to his name.
But with those in mind, and his injury history… along with his former first-overall pick status, it would be a bad idea to bring Newton on board. Sure, he could be a veteran leader in the room, perhaps even somebody who could successfully help Allen, but the hook would be much quicker with Newton behind Allen.
Allen is beloved by Buffalo now, but with signs of struggle, they’ll stick with him if Barkley’s behind him for much longer. If a former MVP is? That could stir up some unneeded controversy both in the stands and in the locker room. The Bills should stay away.
