Buffalo entered the offseason with 13 unrestricted free agents. This number grew by one, as the restricted free agent Isaiah McKenzie was not tendered a contract, thus making him an unrestricted free agent.
There’s been plenty of news involving the Bills’ new acquisitions this past week, but what about the free agents of their own?
Here is an update for each of the Bills who were unrestricted free agents entering this offseason:
Retired
LB Lorenzo Alexander
After a tremendous career on and off the field for the Bills, Alexander retired after the 2019 offseason. He was the consummate leader for the team, helping mentor several young players on the roster. During his four seasons in Buffalo, Alexander registered 279 total tackles, 32 tackles for loss, 24 sacks, and three interceptions.
Re-signed
G Quinton Spain
Spain helped solidify the offensive line last season. As one of four new starters on the line for Buffalo last year, there was a concern to what degree the line could mesh in front of quarterback Josh Allen. It turned out to be an improvement, as it seems all of the starters from the 2019 season will return for next year. Thus, the continuity of the line is intact.
Spain did not allow a sack during the regular season last year in pass protection. He signed a three-year, $15 million contract with the team. Spain is another one of general manager Brandon Beane’s stellar finds during free agency.
S Dean Marlowe
Marlowe played in a reserve role in Buffalo’s secondary last year. He also played some time on special teams. He was active in nine games last year, registering 11 total tackles.
Marlowe signed a one-year deal to return to the club.
