Each offseason, the NFL awards compensatory draft picks to teams who lost more (or better) free agents than they acquired the previous offseason.

For example, if cornerback Chris Harris left Denver and signed a $14 million-per-year contract with another team and the Broncos replaced him with a $4 million-year-year cornerback, Denver would likely receive a comp pick for Harris in 2021.

The league announced 2020 comp picks on Tuesday and the Broncos have been awarded three selections for this year’s draft. The NFL does not announce who the picks are helping compensate for but OverTheCap.com (OTC) makes projections each year.

Denver received an extra fifth-round pick (No. 178) and two seventh-round picks (Nos. 252 and 254). OTC projects that the fifth-round selection was awarded for losing offensive lineman Billy Turner last offseason. The seventh-round picks might have been for losing offensive lineman Max Garcia and cornerback Tramaine Brock in 2019.

The Broncos are now slated to have 11 selections in the 2020 NFL draft, which is scheduled to be held in Las Vegas from April 23-25.
