The NFL has decided to extend the deadline for teams to use the franchise and transition tags on pending free agents until Monday. The previous deadline was Thursday, but the CBA negotiations and upcoming player’s vote have changed the schedule.
Players will vote to approve or shoot down the ownership proposal for the new collective bargaining agreement on Saturday. The voting window was recently extended by the NFLPA. Because the rules for tags change in the proposal, the NFL has opted to wait and see if the proposal passes before locking teams into choosing whether to tag their free agents.
The Browns are unlikely to use either the franchise or transition tags this year. Linebacker Joe Schobert is the team’s most prominent free agent, and the Browns have already decided to let Schobert hit the open market.
