Does Klay Thompson really only use a flip phone?

Apparently, Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson uses only a flip phone. This cursory investigation looks into it and asks questions.

NBCS Authentic reporter Kerith Burke tweeted out some relatively alarming basketball news Monday night:

Apparently, Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson only has a flip phone.

Klay confirms he only has a flip phone. For real,” Burke tweeted.

Of all the players in the NBA, if there’s one player who only has a flip phone, Thompson might be the most likely — though Kawhi Leonard, who famously drove his 1997 Chevy Tahoe even after signing million-dollar contract, would also be a distinct possibility.

But … does Thompson actually only have a flip phone? It seems impossible today. It would honestly be admirable.

A very cursory investigation points to no.

For starters, on all Thompson’s recent tweets, the “Twitter for iPhone” label is at the bottom. That doesn’t prove anything; many stars and celebrities have social media managers to run their accounts. Thompson’s Twitter doesn’t have much action, and it’s not as personal as many players. It might be him using it. It might not.

But one of his tweets from December 2018 actually shows him holding a non-flip phone up to his ear.

Again, this doesn’t prove anything. Maybe the promotion folks at East Bay Times saw him pull out a flip phone and said no, that won’t do. Here’s my iPhone to pretend to use.

But it’s at least evidence of him holding a touch screen.

There is a gif, though, that has pretty solid evidence that Thompson uses an iPhone.

Once again, this isn’t definitive proof. Maybe he’s playing games on a teammate’s phone.

It’s worth noting, though, that the color is similar to the one in the newspaper picture.

This investigation was not in-depth nor time-consuming. He definitely has used a flip phone recently.

If he does use a flip phone consistently, that leads to even more questions: Are the group chats with teammates unbearable? Does he have unlimited texting? Does he text with T9? Does he prefer Motorola or Nokia? Who is on his speed dial — and which teammate has the first number on it? What mid-2000s song clip does he use for notifications?

This investigation is just getting started.
