With so many needs facing the New York Giants this offseason, there are several ways they can go about addressing the roster. One of the priorities is finding a left tackle to help better protect quarterback Daniel Jones.
Sitting with the No. 4 pick in the 2020 NFL draft, the Giants can address that massive need on the edge of the offensive line. They could also add talent to the middle of the defense and to the defensive line.
But Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network has a specific plan for the Giants at No. 4—it begins and ends with Big Blue taking one of the highest upside players in the entire class.
“But, look, as an organization, your number one priority is ensuring that Daniel Jones is going to grow and develop and be a success. So if I have to go through another year of watching some vanilla, boring defense lacking in playmakers, I’m going to do that if it means I can go ahead and get my left tackle that will protect this kid for the next 10 years,” Jeremiah said. “That would take priority for me. I know there’s depth at the tackle class. To me Mekhi Becton is a freak, from Louisville, an absolute freak.”
Even just at the offensive tackle position, the Giants have a few options. They could go with the freak in Becton. There is also a chance they consider Iowa’s Tristan Wirfs, with whom Big Blue is reportedly in love with. There is also Alabama’s Jedrick Wills to consider.
A popular option for the Giants is to trade out of the No. 4 spot in the draft, but Jeremiah wouldn’t consider it with Becton on the board.
“I’m not in the business of trading off freaks at a need position. He’s a left tackle. He’s a better version of Bryant McKinnie. He’s going to be that guy for the next 10 to 12 years to protect your franchise quarterback,” Jeremiah said. “You just don’t see guys like that come around very often. I know trade-back options exist. I know you can take a defensive playmaker. To me I’m not trading off that pick. I’m sitting there right there taking Mekhi Becton.”
The Giants have several needs this offseason. Finding better protection for Jones and bigger running lanes for Saquon Barkley are a top priority.
In Jeremiah’s mind, that starts with taking a prospect with massive upside.
