The Jacksonville Jaguars’ staff got stronger Tuesday night with the addition of former New York Giants coach Ben McAdoo, who will be the team’s new quarterback coach. He’ll now be tasked with getting the best out of either Nick Foles or Gardner Minshew II to prep them to be the team’s starter in 2020.
When the team officially announced the signing Wednesday morning, Doug Marrone praised his new assistant’s knowledge and experience, which he believes will help the quarterbacks on the roster tremendously heading forward.
“Coach McAdoo brings a lot of experience and knowledge to the quarterback room, and we’re excited to add him to our offensive coaching staff,” Marrone said. “He has mentored several great quarterbacks throughout his career, and his understanding of the position will be a valuable addition to our team and for the development of that group.”
McAdoo does have a notable body of work with quarterbacks with the most notable being his work with Aaron Rodgers as the Green Bay Packers’ quarterbacks coach from 2012-13. While McAdoo was there, Rodgers produced a career-high QBR of 108.0 in 2012 and went to the Pro Bowl. He also accumulated a 67.2% completion percentage, which is the second-highest total of his career.
McAdoo’s success in Green Bay eventually got him a job as the Giants’ offensive coordinator in 2014-15. While serving that role in 2015, he propelled the Giants to having the sixth-highest-scoring offense in the NFL. Eli Manning also had career highs in passing attempts, completions, and touchdowns that season.
While his run as head coach with the Giants was a mixed bag he was able to aid the team to their first playoff berth since 2011 as the team went 11-5.
When looking at his career in its entirety, there is certainly more good than bad on McAdoo’s résumé. And while his work as a quarterbacks coach isn’t too extensive, it appears his knowledge of the offensive side will be really beneficial for Minshew and Foles, both of whom must improve in 2020 if named starter.
