Report: Colts, RB Marlon Mack working toward extension

Marlon Mack is close to getting a new deal.

Indianapolis Colts running back Marlon Mack is entering the final year of his rookie contract, but it appears he and the organization are already working toward a contract extension.

Coming off of his first 1,000-yard season, Mack and the Colts are reportedly working toward an extension before the 2020 season gets here, per Jim Ayello of IndyStar.

According to an NFL source, the Colts are working toward securing a long-term deal with running back Marlon Mack. Talks are expected to heat up later this month at the NFL Combine.

Since becoming the starter in the backfield in 2018, Mack has been an electric piece to the offense. He took 247 carries for 1,091 yards and eight rushing touchdowns during the 2019 season while missing two games due to a broken hand.

Earlier in the offseason, we looked at what a possible contract extension might look like for Mack given the current state of the running back market.

Mack was a fourth-round pick with the Colts in 2017. He was used sparingly during his rookie season but took over the backfield following the departure of Frank Gore. He has showcased efficiency and explosiveness during his two seasons as the starting running back.

It has been no secret that general manager Chris Ballard likes to get contract extensions done early and in the offseason. As his first draft class closes in on their final year under contract, it seems Mack will be the first one to get an extension.
