Friday will begin the Hall of Fame countdown for legendary New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning, who will officially announce his retirement in the field house at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center.
Why the field hauls and not the Coaches’ Club or the auditorium?
Because this is big. This is the player who wore Giant blue more games than any other player. This is the player who represented the NY better than any player before him both on and off the field.
This is the player who is only one of five quarterbacks in NFL history to win two or more Super Bowl MVP awards. The other four are Bart Starr, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana and Tom Brady — three Hall of Famers and the other the GOAT who is on his way.
So is Eli. All the haters are going to eat crow five years from now. Manning is going in and he should go in on the first ballot. If he doesn’t, we’ll be here to remind the voters.
Eli Manning's career achievements:
* 2x Super Bowl winner
* 2x Super Bowl MVP
* 57,023 passing yards (7th all-time)
* 366 passing TD (7th all-time)
* 4x Pro Bowler
* Walter Payton Man of the Year winner in 2016
* Never missed a game due to injury
* 13x team captain— Field Yates (@FieldYates) January 22, 2020
Giant fans are generally pleased Manning didn’t attempt to extend his career in a foreign uniform. It just didn’t seem right to them and in the end it didn’t seem right to Eli, either.
When it comes down to recalling the Giants’ glory days for some of the younger fans, it will be Eli’s Giants — the ones who knocked off the mighty New England Patriots twice in the Super Bowl – that they will remember.
