Vikings’ free-agency watch: Safeties

The Vikings have a big decision to make regarding Anthony Harris.

Under contract:

The only player under contract is Pro Bowl safety Harrison Smith. Smith is due $8.35 million in 2020 at 31 years old.

Free agents:

The Vikings have a big decision to make regarding Anthony Harris, who has been one of the best safeties in the entire NFL over the last two seasons. If I had to guess, the Vikings will do everything they can to bring him back. And at 28, it will likely be for the rest of his career.

As for Jayron Kearse and Andrew Sendejo, it seems unlikely those two will be back unless they are for one-year, super cheap deals.

Potential Cap Casualties:

The only eligible player is Smith. That seems incredibly unlikely. The Vikings could save more than $6 million if they do release Smith, but that seems silly considering how important he is to this team’s defense. Smith is currently projected to be the sixth-highest free safety in the league.
