Leading up to the 2019 NFL Draft, it was clear the New York Giants were in the market for a quarterback, but the most talked about names were Dwayne Haskins and Daniel Jones, who the team ended up selecting in Round 1.
However, the Giants also did an extensive amount of work on other quarterbacks that would be available later in the draft, including Drew Lock.
But just how serious was the organization about some of those second tier quarterbacks? Well, if you were to ask Pat Shurmur, he’d tell you they were pretty serious.
“We did. Obviously, we were in the market for a quarterback last year and we had a very, very high opinion of Drew,” Shurmur told Phil Milani of the Denver Broncos website. “We did a lot of work on him. We were very certain that he was going to have an outstanding career — he’s got a bright future –and I’m really looking forward to being able to work with him.”
Given that Shurmur will serve as Denver’s offensive coordinator and oversee Lock, it’s no surprise that he had complimentary words for the young gun slinger. However, the Giants did seem to have an interest in Lock that appeared to exceed their interest in some of the others not named Daniel Jones.
As critical as some have been of Shurmur — and he certainly deserves some of those criticisms — there’s little doubt he did wonders helping to develop Jones and will now benefit Lock equally.
