Alabama quarterback Mac Jones is in the top 3 with the best odds to win the 2020 Heisman Trophy.

Alabama quarterback Mac Jones is in the top 3 with the best odds to win the 2020 Heisman Trophy.

And to be honest, it’s not too crazy to believe. Now, this obviously depicts a situation where Tua Tagovailoa goes pro, and Mac Jones with the starting job. But, if Mac Jones can have a solid Citrus Bowl performance, continue to improve, and have a flawless A-Day performance, there’s a chance Mac Jones at least starts next season as QB1.

So far this season, Jones has thrown for over 1,100 yards, 11 TDs, and 3 INT, and that’s with only 3 official starts.

Let’s think about it game by game. In his first official start against Arkansas, Jones went 18/22 for 235 yards and 3 TDs. His second start 2 weeks later against WCU, Jones hit 10/12 for 275 yards and 3 TDs, and didn’t play more than the first half. And in his most recent start Auburn, even though the Tide lost, Jones still put up quite impressive numbers. Jones finished the Iron Bowl going 26/39 for 335 yards, 4TDs, and 2 INT.

If Jones can put up some impressive numbers in a big win over Michigan in the Citrus Bowl, there’s a case to be made for Mac Jones being the starter next year. If was to continue to develop over the off-season and have a great spring practice, there’s a chance Saban would at least start Mac Jones from an experience standpoint alone. Now, with 5 star QB Bryce Young joining the mix, there’s no telling what could happen.

But I’ll say this, we’ve seen crazier things before. Blake Sims had an amazing transformation during an off-season in 2014 and let his team to the CFB Playoffs, and Jake Coker won a National Title the following year in 2015 at Alabama. Simply put, Mac Jones has the potential to be a good quarterback from Alabama. He’s the type of pro-style quarterback we are used to seeing at Alabama like Greg McElroy and AJ McCarron.

There’s a lot of time between now and next season, and there’s still a Citrus Bowl game to be played. But for right now, it’s pretty cool to see Mac Jones, a guy who went from backup to QB1 in a single season, be in the talk to win the 2020 Heisman, especially since he’s above Bo Nix.

Roll Tide!
