Winning is fun but after starting the season 4-8, winning does have a drawback for the Broncos. Denver is highly unlikely to reach the NFL playoffs so at this point in the season, winning hurts the team’s draft status.
Last week, the Broncos were on pace to select fifth overall in the 2020 NFL draft. After defeating the Chargers on Sunday, Denver dropped all the way down to 11th in the current draft order.
Here’s how the order of the top 12 picks looks entering Week 14, courtesy of NFL.com:
- Cincinnati Bengals (1-11)
- New York Giants (2-10)
- Washington Redskins (3-9)
- Miami Dolphins (3-9)
- Atlanta Falcons (3-9)
- Detroit Lions (3-8-1)
- Arizona Cardinals (3-8-1)
- New York Jets (4-8)
- Los Angeles Chargers (4-8)
- Jacksonville Jaguars (4-8)
- Denver Broncos (4-8)
- Carolina Panthers (5-7)
Drew Lock, who was selected by Denver in the second round of April’s draft, looked good in his NFL debut on Sunday, throwing two touchdown passes and one interception. If the Broncos believe Lock is their QB of the future, that will give the team more options in the first round of the 2020 draft.
Next year’s NFL draft will take place from April 23-25 in Las Vegas.
