Giants eliminated from NFC wildcard, but remain in NFC East hunt

The New York Giants have been eliminated from the NFC wildcard, but somehow remain alive in the NFC East.

With their 19-14 loss to the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field on Sunday afternoon, the New York Giants were officially eliminated from contention for the NFC wildcard playoff.

However, thanks in part to the New England Patriots coming away with a victory over the Dallas Cowboys, the Giants staved off their entire playoff elimination for at least one more week.

Here’s how the NFC East stacks up after 12 weeks:

Dallas Cowboys (6-5)

The Cowboys still lead the way, but they’re as close to a .500 record as they are from losing ground to the next closest divisional team (1 game). And as much as this may pain me to admit, they had the Patriots on their heels on Sunday afternoon and the referees, per the usual, bailed Tom Brady & Co. out. Had it been the Giants, we’d all be sour and salty this Monday morning.

Philadelphia Eagles (5-6)

We said it after back-to-back wins over the Buffalo Bills and Chicago Bears — just give the Eagles time because they’re more likely to fall back down to earth than continue to pretend to be legitimate contenders. Two weeks later, Philly is back under .500 on the season following their latest two-game losing streak. They’re an up-and-down mess of a team and the fact that they remain in the NFC East hunt at this point speaks volumes about the divisional futility.

New York Giants (2-9)

The Giants have now lost seven straight games and have company in the basement of the division. While they hold the tiebreakers, they’re legitimately nearing the bottom of the barrel and have become a complete laughingstock. They are mired in the worst era in team history and failed to win a game in either October or November for the first time in the organization’s history. Yahoo!

Washington Redskins (2-9)

Even when the Redskins win, they somehow lose. They managed to put win No. 2 in the books with a 19-16 victory over the Matthew Stafford-less Detroit Lions on Sunday, doing damage to their draft position. Their rookie quarterback, Dwayne Haskins, also come across looking like an immature fool, missing the victory formation snap because he was too busy celebrating and taking selfies with fans.
