On the tight end position…
The Bills missed out on Greg Olsen. He played with the Panthers, where McDermott previously coached. But Olsen opted for the Seahawks, citing quarterback Russell Wilson as a reason why.
In life without Olsen, the Bills are content with what they have, per McDermott.
“Very confident in the group of players we have at that position. I think it’s one of our deeper positions,” McDermott said.
When discussing the unit, McDermott praised everyone and the only name he left off the list was Jason Croom, who was injured all of last season. Noteworthy: He started with Lee Smith.
“Let’s start with Lee (Smith) and the veteran leadership and what Lee brings to us in terms of the toughness,” McDermott said. “Tyler (Kroft) worked through a lot of adversity last season, even going into last season to begin with.”
McDermott also praised Kroft’s late-season outing against the Steelers, where he scored a touchdown.
The coach wrapped things up with Tommy Sweeney and then attributed any struggles from the likes of Dawson Knox, Buffalo’s incumbent starter, to being a young player. Knox has to hold onto the ball in Year 2.
