6 takeaways from Dion Dawkins’ extension with Bills

Reflecting on Dion Dawkins’ contract extension with the Buffalo Bills.

Solid draft trade

As the story goes, the Bills traded up for Dawkins in 2017. In that overall draft, the Bills had some massive hits such as him, White and Milano. From start to finish? Well, there’s Nathan Peterman and Zay Jones in this same ballpark, too.

But let’s focus on Dawkins for a second. Trading up, the Bills landed Dawkins at pick No. 63 in Round 2. Buffalo sent the Falcons three selections for Dawkins. Picks 75, 149 and 156. How’d this trade breakdown years later?

We can debate if Dawkins was over or underpaid… we don’t need to debate this, though. The Bills won this trade. In

Those three picks?

  • No. 75: LB Duke Riley
    • He started only 16 of 32 career games for the Falcons. By September 2019, Atlanta was done with him, trading him to the Eagles where he’s a special teamer now.
  • No. 149: LB Blair Brown
    • The Falcons made a trade with this pick, sending it to the Jaguars. Brown was the selection, and he hasn’t played in the NFL since 2018.
  • No. 156: RB Brian Hill
    • Hill is still on the Falcons, yes. But they did cut him, put him on their practice squad, and he was claimed by the Bengals in 2018. After being cut again by Cincy, he was re-signed by the Falcons and is a backup there again.

Beane did pretty good in this trade.
