Michigan basketball returned to action on Wednesday night at the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor, and it would have to take on Rutgers without head coach Juwan Howard and forwards Terrance Williams II and Moussa Diabate. Still, the Wolverines were favored over the 16-10 (10-6 in Big Ten) Rutgers Scarlet Knights.
Phil Martelli oversaw the team, and the former St. John’s head coach did well. The maize and blue jumped out to a six-point lead, but thanks to some first-half scoring droughts as well as turnovers, the Wolverines took just a two-point lead into the locker room at halftime.
Four minutes into the second, Rutgers evened the score, but the maize and blue answered with two 3s. But the Scarlet Knights weren’t going away, cutting it to two, yet again. But then, the Wolverines went on a bit of a run, taking a 14-point lead off of a 11-0 run with just under 10 minutes remaining.
From there, Michigan held on, winning 71-62. Here are our five takeaways.
