Having a job during the pandemic
Aside from perhaps being a lot better off financially and working for an NFL organization in a role that only 32 exist… Beane’s not so different than the rest of us. He’s dealing with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and guess what? It’s tough.
Things are a lot different for the Bills and coaching staff right now, but we’re just around the corner for things being a lot different for the front office again. The NFL offseason will be here before we know it and attention will turn to free agency and the draft. Even with COVID-19 we’ve seen the NFL isn’t going to stop at all and that means Beane still has to do his job.
Beane went into detail on how different one aspect of his job is very different currently: Scouting. That’s clearly different for him and his staff.
“Normally (scouts) would go into a school, meet with the pro liaison, meet with the weight coach, the trainer, maybe the academic advisor, any coaches they know… they spend the day there, just getting all the background, getting to know these guys,” Beane said.
Now that’s all gone. Colleges try and do all this stuff over video conferences as best as they can. Actually scouting in person only just resumed in the past few weeks. Scouts can watch practices, but only if they’re in a stadium, likely because of social distancing concerns.
No excuses will be heard from Beane regardless of the task, though.
“It’s been whacky, but our motto, ‘Find a way,'” Beane said. “We can’t miss.”
And he’s right.
