This interesting roster mention with Sean McDermott
While Beane might have personally got a nice pay bump moving to another team… could he find another coach to help him out? Maybe, maybe not. Certainly with McDermott locking himself into Buffalo, having Beane stay makes sense for both the team and the GM himself.
“You can’t do this job without a great head coach,” Beane said.
But in between the lines, Beane did sneak in one thing. He does kind of have a say in the lineup with McDermott.
“It’s natural, I’ve been around coaches…’I’m playing the vet. I want to win every day, right now,'” Beane said.
Specifically, it sounded like Beane was more so talking about early in his tenure with the Bills. Maybe like a 2017-2018 scenario when the Bills were not in win-now mode. It was still an interesting admission of sorts.
Here’s more from Beane on that subject:
“Sean, you can have that conversation with him, ‘Can we talk about this guy? Maybe we can get him in the lineup more, even if he’s not a starter? We need to develop them because we’re not going to be able to pay this player.’ We can have those conversations about where I see the cap going, what I think we’re going to be able to do to in the offseason and why it’s important to go ahead and see… Sometimes it’s pay a player and go ahead and see if he has it. Does this guy have it? And if he doesn’t, let’s make a decision now, before we go into the next offseason,” Beane said. “Those are constant conversations we have. Sean is so willing to do that.”
Currently the Bills really don’t have many, if any, scenarios like that going on. Maybe starting Ike Boettger along the offensive line? Or maybe does a future one play out like getting rookie cornerback Dane Jackson some more reps? Reaching with those, but still something to keep in mind.
