What about Trent?
At this point, things aren’t looking great for defensive end Trent Murphy.
Jerry Hughes and Mario Addison are your starting defensive ends. Then there’s late-round 2019 draftee Daryl Johnson. In a bit of a tweener we have Quinton Jefferson. The Bills’ free agent signee from this offseason could see time at the three-tech spot on the defensive line or on the edge.
With Epenesa’s addition, that’s a crowded place on the outside of the D-line, and Murphy might be the odd-man out. To this point, Beane said he hasn’t looked into trading Murphy. But what else is he going to say?
In his two seasons on the Bills, Murphy hasn’t really shined. His last two games, Buffalo’s playoff game and their seasons finale, Murphy did record two sacks in each game. But there’s a lot of quiet for the near two seasons before that.
Murphy’s contract doesn’t help his cause, either. The 29-year-old is entering the final year of a three-year deal. The Bills can fit his $9.75 million cap hit, but if he’s cut, the dead cap hit replacement is only $1.75M.
Murphy’s motivation is at an all-time high right now, that’s for sure.
