49ers won’t wear all-white throwback uniforms vs. Chiefs

The 49ers aren’t wearing their throwback alternate uniforms vs. the Chiefs in the Super Bowl.

The dream of the 49ers wearing their all white throwback uniforms in Super Bowl LIV is no longer. Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reported Monday that San Francisco is set to wear their traditional road uniforms in the Super Bowl.

The NFL rotates the home team for the Super Bowl each year, and it’s the AFC’s turn to be the designated home team on a neutral site at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium. Kansas City wears their red tops and white pants at home, which means the 49ers will go with their road set instead of their popular all white alternates.

San Francisco debuted the all white 1994 throwbacks in Week 7 last season at home against the Rams in a 39-10 loss. They wore them again for a 51-13 beatdown of the Panthers at home in Week 8 this season, and again on the road at Seattle in Week 17.

They wore a home version of those all whites that featured a red top and white pants with the black shadow around the jersey numbers and black stripe on the pants in their last Super Bowl victory – a 49-26 rout of the Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX.

If the 49ers do want to wear their alternates, they’ll have to petition the league thanks to the NFL’s strict uniform policies. Maiocco’s report didn’t confirm whether San Francisco had taken those steps.

For a team as steeped in tradition as the 49ers, it would make sense that they’d stick with their usual white tops and gold pants. They have two Super Bowl wins in their road uniforms, two in their home reds and one in the home version of the throwbacks they wore for most of the 1994 season.

The all whites would certainly be a nice look since they’re among the best-looking uniforms in the league. However, the regular road white tops and gold pants just feels like what the 49ers should wear in the Super Bowl.
