The 49ers on Thursday finished up their offseason program and will now break until training camp starts in late July. An absence of most players from the team facility doesn’t mean all action will cease in Santa Clara, which is why the team’s salary cap situation could still matter.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer posted an updated look at salary cap space around the NFL. Thanks to a couple of offseason restructures San Francisco is sitting $9.27 million below the cap, giving them the 23rd most space in the league.
Their NFC West rival Cardinals are third with $26.03 million. The Seahawks are 26th with $6.80 million, and the Rams are 30th with a paltry $1.47 million in cap space.
The 49ers tend to like having some cap flexibility for in-season moves, so there aren’t likely to be any major changes. However, defensive end Nick Bosa is due for an extension that should come down sometime just before or at the start of training camp. Bosa is currently set to play on his fully guaranteed fifth-year option, which counts for $17,859,000 against the cap.
A new deal for the reigning Defensive Player of the Year will likely drop that number to something more manageable. That would expand the 49ers’ cap space and give them some extra maneuverability to make a late acquisition or two heading into camp.
