The San Francisco 49ers on Wednesday announced a series of roster moves that included the official signing of quarterback Josh Rosen. They also added three more players to the COVID-19 list and made a practice squad addition.
Rosen was the No. 10 overall pick in the 2018 draft out of UCLA by the Cardinals. He was eventually traded to the Dolphins and then signed to the Buccaneers practice squad after 16 unsuccessful starts between the two clubs.
He’s 3-13 as a starter with a 54.8 percent completion rate, 2,845 yards, 12 touchdowns and 19 interceptions.
Rosen won’t have to go through typical COVID-19 protocols since he was on the Buccaneers roster, and he should be available Saturday as CJ Beathard’s backup. Beathard will get the start with Nick Mullens likely out for the year with an elbow injury, Jimmy Garoppolo still on Injured Reserve and practice squad QB Josh Johnson on the COVID-19 list.
The 49ers also announced three more players will go on the COVID-19 list. Wide receiver Trent Taylor will go on the Reserve/COVID-19 list and likely be out for Saturday’s game. Undrafted rookie tight end Chase Harrell and undrafted rookie fullback Josh Hokit were both placed on the Practice Squad/COVID-19 list.
The new trio of players makes it seven 49ers in the COVID-19 protocol going into Week 16.
In a corresponding move, the 49ers re-added veteran wide receiver Jordan Matthews to the practice squad. He spent time with the club last season and earlier in 2020, so he’d be ready to play if needed.
