49ers practice squad members get new numbers

The San Francisco 49ers saw three uniform number changes to open their week of practice.

The 49ers had a few number changes following roster cuts, although none were on their active roster. A trio of practice squad players switched their numbers according to Matt Barrows of the Athletic.

Safety Johnathan Cyprien, who wore No. 47 in camp, will wear No. 32 as a member of the 49ers’ practice squad. That number was most recently occupied in the regular season by defensive back DJ Reed. Defensive back Jamar Taylor wore it in camp.

Fullback Josh Hokit is now wearing No. 40 after wearing No. 49 during camp. The last player to wear 40 in the regular season for the 49ers was long snapper Colin Holba last season.

Wide receiver Kevin White had No. 2 during his early stint with the club, but now he’s in a more traditional wide receiver number. He’ll don No. 88 — a number worn in camp by tight end MarQueis Gray. Gray was cut and not re-signed. Tight end Garrett Celek wore 88 during his entire seven-year career with the 49ers. The last wide receiver to wear it was Hall of Famer Isaac Bruce in 2008 and 2009.

It sounds like all the other numbers are set heading into the regular season, which kicks off Sunday at 1:25 pm PT at Levi’s Stadium.
