49ers met with DE prospect at Hula Bowl

The 49ers met with Boston College DE prospect Max Roberts before the NFL draft at the Hula BOwl.

The 49ers aren’t only searching for EDGE help in the early rounds of the draft or free agency.  They’re scouring for pass rush assistance up and down the draft board, and met with Boston College DE Max Roberts at the Hula Bowl per Draft Wire’s Justin Melo.

Roberts represented Boston College at the college All-Star event in Hawaii after posting 4.5 sacks in 10 games last season. He joined the Eagles as a transfer from Maine where he put up 4.0 sacks and 4.0 tackles for loss in 11 games. Prior to that he was at Fordham for three seasons and notched 74 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks in 20 games.

It’ll be interesting to see where Roberts eventually lands position-wise in the NFL. He’s pretty undersized at 6-1, 250 pounds, which could make it difficult for him to find regular snaps as an edge rusher.

It might benefit Roberts to wind up with a team like San Francisco that hasn’t been hesitant to move players to new positions in order to maximize their talents. Perhaps he sticks at EDGE, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if he carves out an NFL role to see it come at a position that isn’t as a  pass rusher.
