The San Francisco 49ers will be starting back-up quarterback Nick Mullens against the New York Giants on Sunday.
“Nick’s a good, tough quarterback. He’s accurate,” Giants head coach Joe Judge told reporters. “He’s a competitive dude. . . He’s comfortable in the pocket.”
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan officially announced on Friday that quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) would sit this one out, as would running backs Tevin Coleman (knee) and Raheem Mostert (knee).
In addition to those players, defensive lineman Dee Ford (back) will also miss Sunday’s game and could be out for an extended period of time.
Meanwhile, linebacker Dre Greenlaw (quadricep) did not practice on Thursday and is uncertain for Week 3. Tight end George Kittle (knee) remains limited.
That’s bad news for the 49ers who already have cornerback Richard Sherman, wide receivers Deebo Samuel, Tavon Austin, Jalen Hurd, Chris Thompson and Richie James, defensive linemen Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas, and offensive lineman Ross Reynolds on injured reserve.
