49ers add former Eagles 6th-round DE to practice squad

A new DE on the practice squad.

The San Francisco 49ers on Thursday announced a late-season addition to their practice squad with the acquisition of former Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Tarron Jackson.

Jackson, 26, was a sixth-round pick of the Eagles in the 2021 draft. In three years with Philadelphia he played in 24 games and posted 17 tackles, 1.0 sacks and a forced fumble. This season he spent time with the Carolina Panthers and played in three games before the Panthers waived him in mid-October.

The Eagles re-signed Jackson to their practice squad and released him on December 31.

San Francisco may need some depth along the defensive line for their season finale, but Jackson will also have a couple of days to work out in a practice setting for the 49ers coaching staff. That could be relayed into a reserve/future contract in the offseason where Jackson would have a chance to carve out a role with the 49ers in 2025.

Given the team’s long-term need at defensive end, it’s not a huge surprise they jumped on the opportunity to bring in a DE with NFL experience. Jackson is particularly intriguing because he has a different build than what the 49ers typically bring in at DE.

At 6-2, 254 pounds he’s a pure DE and not the type of player who has the size to get reps at defensive tackle as well.

Jackson played his college football at Coastal Carolina where he racked up 195 tackles, 26.5 sacks, three pass breakups and six forced fumbles in 48 games. He was also a First-Team All-American during his senior season in 2020.
