49ers activate CB Jason Verrett off PUP list

The #49ers have activated CB Jason Verrett ahead of their Week 8 game vs. the Rams. Now the question is whether he plays.

The 49ers on Wednesday announced a new addition to their active roster. Cornerback Jason Verrett was activated off the PUP list to fill the vacant roster spot left when Tevin Coleman was released Tuesday. The team announced Coleman rejoined them on their practice squad.

Verrett was on the PUP list throughout the preseason while he recovered from a torn ACL he suffered Week 1 of last season. The team opened his three-week practice window after Week 4, which was the first day they were able to open it based on NFL rules. Wednesday was the final day for them to make a decision on whether to activate him. Had they not activated him he would’ve remained on PUP for the rest of the season.

Activation for Week 8 doesn’t necessarily mean Verrett will play though. Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Wednesday said the veteran CB will be limited in practice, but a return against the Rams hasn’t been ruled out.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if the team opted to have Verrett inactive for Week 8 since they have a Bye the following week, giving him two full weeks of practice and an off week to re-acclimate to football. However, if the team believes he’s ready to face the Rams, they could certainly use another cornerback after struggling to replace Emmanuel Moseley since he went down with a torn ACL in Week 5.
