Situation with the Bills
So why did the Bills bring him in? Well, the Bills have had a good defense under head coach Sean McDermott. They’ve had an OK offense which will hopefully improve in 2020. Then there’s the punting situation. Corey Bojorquez is your incumbent kicker. He fits McDermott’s persona of being a “football guy.”
Can’t give em’ an inch, right? Never.
Take any edge you can get.
Football guy.
What’s that have to do with Bojorquez? Well, he’s a lefty. Yes, that makes a difference. The ball spins differently for a returner waiting for his punts. They’re used to right-footed guys like Edwards is.
But Bojorquez hasn’t exactly been consistent since joining the Bills. In 2018, the Patriots cut him after training camp and Bojorquez surprisingly replaced Colton Schmidt, the team’s long-time punter. Then injury sidelined Bojorquez and Buffalo brought back Schmidt, who was later replaced by Matt Darr.
Last season Bojorquez stuck around for the entire year, but again, his number weren’t consistent, averaging only 41.9 yards per kick. It appears that McDermott and special teams coordinator Heath Farwell are looking to find some more consistency in their punters. In an effort to do so, Edwards and former Falcons long-time punter, Matt Bosher, worked out for Buffalo just a day ago on Tuesday, and Edwards was quickly signed.
Further showing Buffalo’s desire for consistency, McDermott sacrificed versatility for Edwards by cutting Kaare Vedvik, who’s also been a placekicker in his NFL career. Vedvik was not battling Stephen Hauschka and rookie Tyler Bass for that job, but it’s a versatile ability Vedvik had nonetheless.
So that’s what Edwards will have to do for the Bills… show some consistency.
