Conventional wisdom suggests the Bucs will bring back Jameis Winston for another year, despite the 30-interception season we just witnessed. Many former quarterbacks, including Carson Palmer and Steve Young, think Winston can still thrive in Tampa Bay. Why should the team waste a year trying to get a rookie acclimated to the NFL? Well, if Winston does return, bringing a rookie in and having him sit behind Winston for a year could pay dividends in the long run. Look at Patrick Mahomes of the Chiefs, who sat behind Alex Smith in 2017 only to throw for 50 touchdowns in 2018 while winning the MVP award. Now, Mahomes has his team in the Super Bowl. Herbert is a big-bodied quarterback who could do well in Arians’ system. He may be off the board by the time the Bucs pick, but if they like what they see at the Senior Bowl, they could consider trading up to grab him.
