3. How will the backfield situation shake out for Buffalo?
Running back Devin Singletary wrestled the starting backfield job away from veteran Frank Gore last season after he returned from an early hamstring injury. The 2018 third-round pick was everything as advertised and more. Singletary average 5.1 yards per carry last year on 151 handoffs. He added two touchdowns on the ground. Somewhat unexpectedly, Singletary was effective in the passing attack, catching 29 passes and scoring two touchdowns.
Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott has discussed how he loves to establish the run. However, he may be using these two as closers late in the game. Both Singletary and Utah rookie Zack Moss can get downhill and put a hurt on opposing defenders.
Singletary has established himself as the top option for Buffalo during his short time in the league. Moss could be a solid complement to Singletary. However, there might be some competition here (another thing that the staff loves), as Moss could push Singletary for snaps in the same way Singletary did by encroaching on Gore’s snaps. Nevertheless, with the disjointed offseason, the team does not need to rush Moss along.
Still, their usage will reflect the success of the Bills offense this fall.
