21 For 2021 College Football Topics, No. 17: Letdown Game For Every Power Five Team

21 for 2021 College Football Topics, No. 17: The letdown or sandwich game for every Power Five team.

SEC East

Florida Gators

Letdown/Sandwich Game: at USF, Sept. 11
Game Before: Florida Atlantic
Game After
: Alabama

This is the ultimate focus week. The Florida Atlantic game to start the season shouldn’t be a problem in theory, but Willie Taggart’s team will at least be fired up to make it tough. The Alabama game in Week 3 might make or break the season before it gets going. USF shouldn’t be an issue on the road, but it’ll be impossible to not start planning for the Tide.

Georgia Bulldogs

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Kentucky, Oct. 16
Game Before: at Auburn
Game After
: Florida (in Jacksonville)

There’s always a big concerns whenever a game is between the two rivalry moments. With Clemson to start the season, there’s a shot the Dawgs can’t afford a loss the rest of the way. Going to Auburn will be interesting, and there’s a week off before facing the Gators, but there can’t be a slip against UK.

Kentucky Wildcats

Letdown/Sandwich Game: at South Carolina, Sept. 25
Game Before: Chattanooga
Game After
: Florida

Kentucky doesn’t have a true sandwich game, and the whole second half of the season if full of letdown concerns, but the South Carolina is a wee bit different. Call this a Do NOT Look Ahead game, because after going to Columbia it’s Florida, LSU, at Georgia.

Missouri Tigers

Letdown/Sandwich Game: South Carolina, Nov. 13
Game Before: at Georgia
Game After
: Florida

Missouri isn’t strong enough to disrespect South Carolina – even a rebuilding South Carolina – but it’s a late season dog days game sandwiched between the stars of the East. Going to Georgia won’t be fun, and finishing up the season with Florida is rough, so there HAS to be a win over …

South Carolina Gamecocks

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Vanderbilt, Oct. 16
Game Before: at Tennessee
Game After
: at Texas A&M

Vanderbilt is just about everyone’s letdown game in the SEC, but for a South Carolina team that’s going to need every win it can possibly get to go bowling, there can’t be a home mistake. The game comes just before going to Texas A&M and right after dealing with another team that will desperately need the win …

Tennessee Volunteers

Letdown/Sandwich Game: at Kentucky, Nov. 6
Game Before: at Alabama
Game After
: Georgia

It’s not like Tennessee won’t take Kentucky seriously – it’s going to need every win it can get – and the game comes after getting a week off – but it also comes before dealing with Georgia and comes off the fun against Alabama.
Full Schedule Analysis

Vanderbilt Commodores

Letdown/Sandwich Game: UConn, Oct. 2
Game Before: Georgia
Game After
: at Florida

It’ll be asking a ton for Vanderbilt to be competitive against the top teams in the East, much less win them. The UConn game will come after dealing with Georgia and Stanford at home, and right before going to Florida. The Commodores will see UConn as a light scrimmage.

SEC 2021 Predictions: Spring Version

SEC West

Alabama Crimson Tide

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Mercer, Sept. 11
Game Before: Miami (in Atlanta)
Game After
: at Florida

Of course Alabama isn’t going to lose to Mercer, but there’s one interesting aspect of it – it’s in early September. The scrimmage FCS game for Bama is usually in late November – preferably before Auburn – and now New Mexico State is the layup on November 13th. Mercer is the breather between Miami to open things up and the trip to Florida.

Arkansas Razorbacks

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Georgia Southern, Sept. 18
Game Before: Texas
Game After
: Texas A&M (in Arlington)

No one likes playing an option team before having to deal with a big game the week after, but that’s exactly what the Hogs have to do. The Texas game will be interesting, the Texas A&M date in Jerry World will be fun, and there’s a trip to Georgia right after that. Georgia Southern has the O to make things even worse.
Full Schedule Analysis

Auburn Tigers

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Georgia State, Sept. 25
Game Before: at Penn State
Game After
: at LSU

It’s going to be a rebuilding season no matter what for new head man Bryan Harsin, but it’ll be rough if the Tigers can’t get by a – don’t laugh – dangerous Georgia State team. AU goes to Penn State before and LSU after, and then faces Georgia.
Full Schedule Analysis

LSU Tigers

Letdown/Sandwich Game: at Ole Miss, Oct. 23
Game Before: Florida
Game After
: at Alabama

There’s a week off before the Alabama game, but going to Ole Miss comes at the end of a run of eight straight games to start the season. It also comes right after dealing with Florida.
Full Schedule Analysis

Ole Miss Rebels

Letdown/Sandwich Game: Liberty, Nov. 6
Game Before: at Auburn
Game After
: Texas A&M

There are several dangerous games to get up for, but Liberty is going to be just good enough to pull off the win. Throw in the return of Hugh Freeze to his old stomping grounds, and the spotlight will be on. The problem? Besides the Flames being that good, Ole Miss plays at Tennessee, LSU and at Auburn before, and Texas A&M right after.
Full Schedule Analysis

Mississippi State Bulldogs

Letdown/Sandwich Game: at Vanderbilt, Oct. 23
Game Before: Alabama
Game After
: Kentucky

Mississippi State is going to have to exhale at some point. Leading up to the trip to Vandy is … NC State, at Memphis, LSU, at Texas A&M, Alabama. There’s a week off before facing the Tide, but it’s still going to be a grind.
Full Schedule Analysis

Texas A&M Aggies

Letdown/Sandwich Game: South Carolina, Oct. 23
Game Before: at Missouri
Game After
: Auburn

This is more about the timing than the date with South Carolina being a sandwich or even a letdown. The Aggies don’t get their week off until late October after playing the Gamecocks. Leading up to that, A&M has to play Alabama and go to Missouri – it’s a true dog days of the season game.
