Florida slips in CBS Sports power rankings ahead of SEC play

The Gators are still a top-four team in CBS Sports’ power rankings but had the third spot taken from them by a Big 12 squad.

Florida basketball wrapped up the 2024 portion of the schedule with a perfect 13 wins in as many tries, marking the program’s best start since the 2005-06 national championship season. Next up is the Southeastern Conference slate, which will be the true test for this Gators squad.

The national rankings have been kind to the Orange and Blue thus far, with the USA TODAY Coaches Poll putting the team at No. 5 while the Associated Press Poll has them a spot behind at No. 6; the NET rankings have Todd Golden’s gang all the way up at No. 4.

Last Friday, CBS Sports writer Kyle Boone published his college basketball power rankings and put Florida in third place, behind the Auburn Tigers and Tennessee Volunteers, respectively. In his update on Thursday, he moved the Iowa State Cyclones up to No. 3 while dropping the Gators to No. 4.

“We’re about to see just how real Florida’s undefeated run in nonconference really is,” Boone points out. “The SEC looks like a gauntlet this season, and Florida’s schedule the next few weeks looks brutal. For now, though, the Gators have an unblemished record and looked very good in the process.”

Boone’s colleague at CBS Sports Gary Parrish moved Florida up a spot from No. 7 to No. 6 in his Top 25 and 1 rankings on the same day.

CBS Sports Power Rankings Explained

“Ranking teams with an emphasis on recent performance based on their level of competition. These are heavily unscientific in nature and can be distilled down to a “vibes” ranking — with things like margin of victory, injuries, performance vs. top competition, momentum and other sometimes subjective factors weighing into the equation.

“The power rankings can be thought of in a weekly setting as a reaction — or sometimes even an overreaction — to the small sample of the week that was.”

Next up for Florida

The Gators open up the SEC schedule against Kentucky on Saturday, Jan. 4, inside Rupp Arena. Tipoff is slated for 11 a.m. ET and the game will be broadcast on ESPN.

College football fans had jokes after Georgia’s Parker Jones got a sideline penalty for colliding with a ref

That had to be the worst feeling.

When Georgia redshirt sophomore Parker Jones arrived to the Superdome on Thursday, you just know he never expected to have the spotlight on him in the game. After all, the walk-on defensive back wasn’t even suited up for the Sugar Bowl against Notre Dame. He was going to be on the sidelines, rooting for his teammates. What could go wrong?

Jones found out that answer the tough way.

In the first half, Georgia finally got an explosive play when Gunner Stockton connected with Arian Smith for 66 yards. But as Smith was running down the sidelines, the pandemonium on the Bulldogs’ bench impacted the side judge’s pursuit.

That’s where we met Jones who collided with the official, drawing the penalty.

You had to feel for Jones after that one as he was just excited for the huge play, but he can’t make contact with an official. As Jones was trying his best to hide from cameras on the sidelines, college football fans had plenty of jokes for the penalty.

The flag very well may have costed Georgia points.

This was how Twitter/X reacted

‘that SEC podcast’ compares Texas A&M coach Mike Elko to a poor magician after loss to USC

“Elko is like that guy that has got that magic trick, but he’s done it so many times you kinda catch on to what he’s doing.”

After the Texas A&M football team lost a 17-point lead in the Las Vegas Bowl against USC, everyone had something to say about head coach Mike Elko, including the hosts of ‘that SEC podcast.’

“I thought one thing about Elko coming over here was we would have that tough, tenacious defense again, which we did up front. They did create mistakes, they had three picks in this game. It’s like if they didn’t get those, what would’ve happened? This could’ve been a blowout,” Cousin Shane said. “It was a close game and came down to the wire.”

“Elko is like that guy that has got that magic trick, but he’s done it so many times you kinda catch on to what he’s doing.”

The program’s other host tried to spin it forward in a positive manner, but that didn’t last long.

“They’re adding all these guys in the portal, they’re bringing back the quarterback, maybe five starting offensive linemen. They need the running backs to be healthy and could have a really dynamic offense,” Michael Bratton foretold. “I’m tired of it, i’m not doing it anymore, I’m not hyping them up if they win a damn game. They fooled us this year, 7-1, we have the coach of the year here. Biggest dud coach of the year.

“Watch Conner Weigman become a Heisman winner at Houston, how awful would that be?”

Khabib Nurmagomedov rips Irish MMA ahead of cousin’s title defense vs. Paul Hughes

What does Khabib Nurmagomedov think of Irish MMA? “There is no fighters, brother.”

[autotag]Khabib Nurmagomedov[/autotag] doesn’t think very highly of the overall quality of Irish fighters in MMA.

Ahead of his cousin [autotag]Usman Nurmagomedov[/autotag]’s (18-0) lightweight title defense against [autotag]Paul Hughes[/autotag] (13-1) at Bellator Champions Series: Road to Dubai on Jan. 25, UFC Hall of Famer Khabib is not interested in a discussion about the impact of athletes from Ireland compared to his native Dagestan.

The biggest rivalry in the history of MMA came between Khabib, from Dagestan, and Ireland’s Conor McGregor. The matchup between Usman and Hughes is being touted as the next chapter in the feud between regions.

Khabib, however, said it’s a foolish comparison. He sees only two strong Irish representatives in the sport with Hughes and McGregor (although Ian Machado Garry is worth mentioning), and said it pales to the strength from his part of the world.

“Ireland don’t have fighters, brother,” Nurmagomedov said in an interview with PFL. “Let’s be honest: How many fighters from Ireland? Paul Hughes and Conor. Who else? There is no fighters, brother. You come to Dagestan, you can understand. So many organizations, they don’t even want to sign Dagestan fighters because they worry about like, everybody can become champion.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/DEVllPBRG7B/

In the aftermath of his MMA retirement in 2020, Khabib has evolved into one of the prominent coaches in MMA behind his cousins Usman and Umar, his childhood friends Islam Makhachev and Gadzhi Rabadanov, plus many more. He works first hand with the very best from Dagestan, so he minced no words on how the fighters around him stack up to those from Ireland.

“Let’s be honest: Dagestan level of MMA here (up high),” Nurmagomedov said. “But Ireland level, like not even half of Dagestan level.”

How far did Colts fall in ESPN’s Week 18 power rankings?

How far did the Indianapolis Colts fall in ESPN’s Week 18 power rankings following their loss to the Giants?

With one week left in the regular season and following a devastating loss to the New York Giants, where do the Indianapolis Colts now fall in ESPN’s Week 18 power rankings?

As I’m sure you can guess, the Colts took a tumble this week, but perhaps not as much as you’d expect dropping from No. 21 to No. 22 as they now sit at 7-9 on the season and eliminated from playoff contention.

This is roughly where the Colts have spent much of the season in these rankings. We’ve seen the Colts ranked as high as 18th, and that came just a few weeks ago following their win over New England. However, we’ve also seen them as low as 28th following an 0-2 start, and they’ve really been everywhere in between this season.

Determining these rankings for ESPN are more than 80 writers, editors, and TV personalities evaluating each team’s performance and then ranking them from 1-32.

The loss on Sunday to the New York Giants was reminiscent of one from the 2021 season when they face another two-win team, that time the Jaguars, with the opportunity to clinch a playoff spot with a win, but instead lost by multiple scores.

We’ve spent the last several days dissecting the performance and, in short, given the circumstances with the Colts needing to win and the opponent, a Giants’ offense that was one of the worst in football, that simply cannot happen.

Defensive coordinator Gus Bradley summed things up well, calling it “embarrassing,” while DeForest Buckner didn’t hold back saying “there’s going to be some changes,” hinting at the offseason ahead.

However, before we get to that point, there is one game left to be played against the Jaguars. At 4-12 on the season, the Jaguars are now No. 25 in ESPN’s rankings, jumping up from No. 30 after a Week 17 win over the Titans.

The team is coming off impressive road victories against Colorado State and Fresno State, with CJ Noland matching a career-high 23 points in the latter, marking the sixth Lobo to score 20 or more points this season.

Nevada, currently 8-6 overall and seeking its first Mountain West win after three losses, is led by Nick Davidson, who averages 15.1 points and 6.8 rebounds per game.

While Nevada leads the all-time series 14-9, the Lobos have claimed victory in five of the last eight matchups at The Pit. Last season,

New Mexico swept Nevada with dominant wins of 89-55 at home and 83-82 on the road.

Wolf Pack Falls Short Against Wyoming, Lobos Stay Hot with Win Over Colorado State

The Nevada Wolf Pack fought hard but fell short in their recent clash against Wyoming, losing a tight contest 66-63

Both teams battled intensely, with Nevada committing 16 personal fouls compared to Wyoming’s 19.

The Cowboys capitalized from beyond the arc, hitting 11 of 21 three-point attempts, and were nearly flawless at the free-throw line, converting 11 of 12 for an impressive 91.7%.

Wyoming also collected 19 rebounds (4 offensive, 15 defensive) while dishing out 10 assists and recording four steals.

Defensively, Nevada struggled to slow Wyoming’s efficient offense, allowing them to shoot 48.9% from the field (22 of 45).

Nevada Wolf Pack: Last 5 Games

Over their last five outings, the Nevada Wolf Pack have posted a field goal percentage of 39.2% (21.8 made on 46.3 attempts per game) and a free throw-to-field goal attempt rate of 23.0%

From beyond the arc, they’ve recorded a three-point rate of 32.9% while maintaining a 46.6% success rate on two-point attempts.

Kobe Sanders has been a pivotal contributor for the Wolf Pack, accounting for 28.7% of the team’s assists, averaging 4.2 per game.

As a unit, the Wolf Pack are averaging 62.2 points and 23.5 rebounds per game during this stretch.

However, the Wolf Pack’s defense created 18 turnovers and earned 9 steals, showing resilience and determination despite the recent losses.

This is a promising sign if you’re a Wolfpack fan that they can bounce back in the upcoming games.

Offensively, Nevada shot 44.7% from the field (21 of 47) and was solid from the free-throw line, making 16 of 20 attempts (80.0%).

They also connected on 5 of their 11 three-point shots, demonstrating long-range efficiency.

Kobe Sanders stood out for Nevada, scoring 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting while adding two rebounds and an assist in 32 minutes of play.

Kobe Sanders’s Season Stats

Kobe Sanders has logged 409 minutes on the court this season, tallying 197 points. Defensively, he averages 1.0 steals and 0.3 blocks per game.

Over 13 games, Sanders is putting up 15.2 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per outing.

His season totals include 57 assists and 42 rebounds, with 5 coming on the offensive glass and 37 on defense.

Sanders has been efficient offensively, shooting 48.4% from the field and 43.6% from beyond the arc.

His free-throw accuracy stands at 78.9%, contributing to an effective field goal percentage of 55.1%. His all-around game makes him a key player for Nevada.

His consistent performance was a bright spot in an otherwise tough outing for the Wolf Pack.

Now sitting at 8-5 on the season, Nevada averages 75.5 points per game (190th in Division 1) while shooting 49.3% from the field.

The team has been strong from deep, connecting on 41.7% of their three-point attempts, but their free-throw percentage of 69.9% leaves room for improvement.

Nevada also averages 33.9 rebounds and 205 total assists this season, ranking them 95th in Division 1 for playmaking.

Defensively, the Wolf Pack forces 12.2 turnovers per game while drawing 20.4 fouls from opponents.

They allow a field goal percentage of 41.5% and concede 30.5 rebounds per game.

Opponents are hitting 34.1% from beyond the arc against Nevada, with the team ranking 63rd in the nation in opponent points per game (66.2).

Despite the loss, Nevada’s solid offensive metrics and tenacious defense suggest they can bounce back in upcoming games.

New Mexico Lobos Secure 103-89 Win at Fresno State, Start Conference Play 3-0

The New Mexico men’s basketball team completed a two-game road sweep with an impressive 103-89 victory over Fresno State on Tuesday night at the Save Mart Center.

With the win, the Lobos (11-3, 3-0 MW) extended their streak to four games, marking their first 3-0 start in conference play since the 2015-16 season.

Mustapha Amzil and CJ Noland each poured in 23 points to lead the Lobos, with Noland matching his career high.

Donovan Dent contributed 18 points, Tru Washington added 14, and Nelly Junior Joseph recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Undoubtedly, this Richard Pitino Lobo team is surging with the production he is getting out of a deep bench.

At the post-interview CJ Noland: “We are out there playing at the end of the day…we are good basketball players, Coach Pitino believes in us, and our confidence is high.”

Between CJ Noland, Mustapha Amzil, Tru Washington, and Brayden Appelhans all stepping up on the offensive side, this Lobo team is now really playing well together.

How It Happened

The Lobos jumped out to an early 14-3 lead, fueled by a 12-0 run that included two three-pointers from Amzil.

The momentum continued as the lead expanded to 31-14 midway through the first half, peaking at 39-21 with six minutes remaining.

Despite a Fresno State push that cut the deficit to 10, New Mexico closed the half with a 7-0 run to enter the break up 53-36.

Amzil led the first-half charge with 14 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting performance.

In the second half, the Lobos extended their advantage to 62-43 within the first four minutes and maintained control with a 79-65 lead at the midway point.

Although Fresno State narrowed the gap to 86-75 with 5:30 remaining, New Mexico responded with an 8-0 surge to secure the win.

Lobo Highlights

  • Breaking the Streak: The Lobos snapped an eight-game losing streak in Fresno, earning their first victory at the Save Mart Center since 2015-16.
  • Offensive Explosion: New Mexico’s 103 points marked its highest total in a conference game since 2018, when they defeated Colorado State 108-87.
  • First-Half Dominance: The 53 points in the opening half were the most in a road game for the Lobos since a 58-point first half at Colorado State in 2018.
  • Bench Firepower: Noland became the sixth Lobo this season to score 20+ points in a game. His 23 points were the most off the bench since KJ Jenkins scored 26 at UNLV in 2022.

Quotable

“We haven’t won here in nine years, so this was great. It was a long trip after Colorado State, but we found a way to get it done. We had some great moments, but I’m frustrated by the final few minutes again. A 14-point win is good, but metrics show that a larger margin might matter. The first half was fantastic defensively. We were ready to go but need to be stronger on the ball at the end.”
Richard Pitino

With a high-powered offense and room for growth defensively, the Lobos remain a formidable opponent as they progress through the season.

As the season progresses, Nevada and New Mexico remain teams to watch, each with unique strengths poised to shape their campaigns.

Prediction
New Mexico 79, Nevada 75

The Lobos claimed victory in the first meeting between these teams with a wire-to-wire performance during a stretch of nearly flawless play.

However, New Mexico has stumbled recently, dropping two straight home games, including an 80-77 loss to UNLV last Saturday, exposing some inconsistencies.

Despite these setbacks, New Mexico arguably possesses the most overall talent and the highest potential in the Mountain West.

Yet, their inconsistency has been a concern. The Lobos remain a challenging matchup for Nevada with their size and athleticism.

While the Wolf Pack has shown stronger form since their first encounter, New Mexico’s urgency for a signature road win after two home losses could make the difference.

Look for the Lobos to edge out Nevada and complete the season sweep in a closely contested game.

LSU set to host one of the transfer portal’s top defensive backs from SEC rival

LSU football will host one of the top available players in the transfer portal at a key position of need

LSU football has the top-ranked transfer class in the country, according to 247Sports. But the Tigers aren’t done yet.

Per a report from 247 and CBS Sports, LSU is set to host former Auburn defensive back Keionte Scott on a visit.

Per the On3 Industry Rankings, Scott is the No. 171 ranked overall player in the portal, but that isn’t completely reflective of who Scott is as a player.

Scott, who began his career at the junior college level, was a three-year starter at Auburn.

In 2022 and 2023, Scott was one of the better nickel defenders in the SEC. He’s athletic enough to cover receivers in man and can defend the run near the line of scrimmage.

LSU lost a handful of defensive backs in the transfer portal and needs someone to play Blake Baker’s STAR position, now voided with Major Burns departing.

Scott would bring over 1,300 snaps of SEC experience to a defense in search of veterans on the backend.

LSU already added former Virginia Tech cornerback Mansoor Delane from the portal. Delane and Scott both bring versatility and the ability to play different roles, which will allow LSU to play its young guys where they’re comfortable.

‘Conference is what it’s all about,’ Texas A&M PG Wade Taylor IV is ready for start of SEC

“I’m excited. Conference is always a great time. You get to see who is who. You get to really fight with your brothers every day,” he said.

Texas A&M senior point guard Wade Taylor IV recently moved into second all-time in scoring, asserting himself as one of the best Aggies men’s basketball players in history.

“It’s a blessing. I’m thankful to be here. I’m thankful for my coaches and teammates,” Taylor said Saturday night. “Hopefully, we can keep it going.”

Texas A&M has won seven games in a row and stands at 11-2 overall, entering the beginning of SEC play this weekend by hosting the Texas Longhorns on Saturday night.

“I’m excited. Conference is always a great time. You get to see who is who,” Taylor foretold. “You get to really fight with your brothers every day.

“Conference is what it’s all about.”

The Aggies beat No. 21 Creighton, Rutgers, Wake Forest, Texas Tech, No. 11 Purdue, Houston Christian University and Abilene Christian University during the current winning streak.

Texas A&M hosts the bitter rival Longhorns on Saturday night at Reed Arena with tip off scheduled for 7 p.m.
