Lincoln Riley 2 for 1 special might unlock USC success in Big Ten

Lincoln Riley has a special fondness for the Arnold brothers at USC. Let’s see what they do on the field.

USC football head coach Lincoln Riley recently talked in a Zoom call about the recruitment of the Arnold brothers, Akili and Easton Mascarenas, and what that might mean for the Trojans in the Big Ten:

“We had a couple of conversations and it was one of those that we knew was going to happen pretty fast. I actually flew to Corvallis in a driving rainstorm and I went and met both of them at their apartment. I ended up staying at their apartment for two hours, just the three of us, and we just we had a great talk. It’s not hard to get in pretty deep with them. You could tell right away they were passionate about football, they were passionate about going to a place where they felt like they had a chance to really go win big. They were passionate about hearing my vision for our program and where we were headed, where they could obviously be of service, and where I thought the roles could align. I got to be honest: Of all the recruiting visits and all the home visits and all the ones over the years that sometimes admittedly run together a little bit when you look back on them, I don’t know if I’ve ever had a more high-energy, fun meeting — literally just the three of us in some college kids’ apartment in Corvallis — we had a great time. We ended up leaving much later than anticipated because it was hard to end it, but you could just just feel their vibe and energy towards each other competitively, their passion for it. You could feel it from the minute I walked in the door. It was a lot of fun. They’re glad they’re on our team.”

Twitter reacts to Arch Manning scoring 2 touchdowns vs. CSU

Peyton Manning’s nephew, Arch, entered Saturday’s game against CSU late in the third quarter and scored two touchdowns in a 52-0 win.

The Texas Longhorns dominated the Colorado State Rams in a blowout 52-0 win on Saturday afternoon.

Most fans of the Denver Broncos probably didn’t like seeing CSU getting blown out, but it did lead to the appearance of Peyton Manning‘s nephew.

Longhorns redshirt freshman quarterback Arch Manning replaced starter Quinn Ewers late in the third quarter with Texas leading 38-0. Manning went 5-of-6 passing for 95 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for a score.

Arch is the son of Cooper Manning (Peyton and Eli’s brother). He had just five passing attempts in two appearances with the Longhorns last fall.

You can watch the 19-year-old QB’s highlights from Saturday’s game below:

His very first pass went for 40 yards:

Later in the drive, he threw his first touchdown pass:

The Broncos just used a first-round draft pick to select quarterback Bo Nix in April. If Nix doesn’t work out, perhaps Denver will consider Manning in 2026 or 2027.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes discusses connection with HC Andy Reid

Kansas City #Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes discusses connection with HC Andy Reid | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs will play the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday to kick off the new season.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes spoke with NBC’s Chris Simms ahead of the season opener. He dives into multiple topics, including his connection with head coach Andy Reid.

“There’s actually times in games where I know what plays on the call before he calls it. And that’s not just like the first 15, that’s like during the game and middle or third quarter,” said Mahomes. “He starts sending personnel in, and I’m like, got it. I know exactly where we’re going and why we’re doing it. And it’s cool because it develops before the play even happens. I know who I’m gonna throw it to. I know how it’s going to look, and then I go out there and execute it. That just comes with a lot of reps, a lot of time with Coach Reid, and a lot of the same guys in our football team.”

Mahomes and Reid have also had dinners together that included real moments similar to their infamous State Farm commercial. The bond remains strong between the franchise’s winningest head coach and superstar quarterback.

Countdown to Kickoff: Taysom Hill is the Saints Player of Day 7

With only seven days remaining to the Saints’ Week 1 kickoff, our player of the day is Taysom Hill

We are down to only seven days remaining until the New Orleans Saints open their 2024 regular season against the Carolina Panthers in Week 1, which makes today’s player of the day Taysom Hill, the current wearer of the No. 7. Hill has been a staple of the Saints’ offense for the past few years, and with the new offensive scheme coming with Klint Kubiak, he may see more touches than ever before.

To start off, here is some background on Hill before we get into what we can expect from him in 2024.

  • Name (Age): Taysom Hill (34)
  • Position/s: Running back, Tight end, fullback, quarterback, special teams gunner
  • Height, weight: 6-foot-2, 220 pounds
  • Relative Athletic Score: 9.60
  • 2024 salary cap hit: $9,196,500
  • College: BYU
  • Drafted: Undrafted in 2017 (Green Bay Packers)
  • NFL experience: 8th season

Hill has been an extremely critical component to the Saints, playing in 97 games for them across seven seasons, starting 41, and accruing 2,159 rushing yards, 27 rushing touchdowns, 76 receptions for 756 yards and 11 touchdowns, and 191 passing completions for 2,348 yards and 8 touchdowns. On top of all of that, he has had 1,148 snaps on special teams in that span of time.

The part that makes this even more interesting is his usage has been somewhat minimized by Pete Carmichael in recent years, especially in the year since Sean Payton left who utilized him as much as possible. However, now we have Kubiak at OC, and he has been utilizing Hill at fullback throughout training camp on top of his prior obligations. With Kubiak’s experience with Kyle Juszczyk, one of if not the best fullback in the NFL with great utilization, Hill may be in for some fun new play-calls heading his way. With little to no competition for his snaps due to his unique positional value, he will likely be in for another year of quality production.

Greg Penner has high expectations for Sean Payton’s Broncos

“It’s a young team, but I’ve got high expectations for what we can accomplish,” Broncos owner/CEO Greg Penner said.

Last year, the Denver Broncos’ ownership group had their first opportunity to hire an NFL head coach, and they swung big.

Broncos owner/CEO Greg Penner struck a deal with Sean Payton and he gave GM George Paton permission to trade draft assets to acquire the coach. Then he made Payton the highest-paid coach in American sports.

Penner is all-in on Payton, and he believes the coach can turn the franchise around after eight seasons of missing the playoffs.

“I do think he’s energized,” Penner said last week. “Any time going into Year 2 is going to be a little bit easier than the first year where you’ve come into an organization, you understand the organization, the history, the fans.

“He, George and myself, have developed a real sense of partnership and respect and communication. He’s had a chance to reshape the roster in a way that he’s really excited about. It’s great to see his approach.”

Denver went 8-9 in Payton’s first season. It was a step forward — that was the Broncos’ best record in seven years — but it wasn’t enough to reach the playoffs. Now entering Year 2 with Payton in charge, Penner has high expectations for his team.

“I’m encouraged by what I saw in training camp,” the owner said. “You go back to when I spoke after the season. I said this was going to be a critical offseason. It’s obviously too early to declare success, but I’ve been really impressed with what Sean and George have done this offseason with the veteran players we brought in through free agency or trades or approached the draft, what we did there.

“From the first day of OTAs, just the enthusiasm, the competitiveness. I mean, I’m sure you guys could hear it on the field. It was different and that carried through to training camp. That passion and intensity, we saw it in the preseason games. It’s a young team, but I’ve got high expectations for what we can accomplish.”

Payton, 60, is under contract with the Broncos through the 2027 season. We’ll see if he can get Denver back to the postseason before that deal expires.

Wisconsin falls far in updated ESPN FPI ranking after win over Western Michigan

Wisconsin falls far in updated ESPN FPI ranking after win over Western Michigan

Wisconsin is trending in the wrong direction after a 28-14 Week 1 win over Western Michigan.

Despite the win, the Badgers fell seven spots in ESPN FPI to No. 46, now with an overall rating of only 4.0.

Related: Takeaways from Wisconsin’s 28-14 Week 1 win over Western Michigan

The drop makes sense given the context. Wisconsin struggled to defeat a Western Michigan team that entered the game ranked No. 119 in FPI (out of 134 FBS programs). The Broncos have risen since their strong performance. But much of that can be attributed to the Badgers’ struggles on both sides of the football.

FPI and SP+ ratings are not the end-all for evaluating a team. Wisconsin moves into Week 2 with a 1-0 record, which is technically all that matters. But in a week where Iowa won 40-0 and Nebraska won 40-7, both against lesser competition, it’s hard not to look at Wisconsin’s performance with a critical eye.

The Badgers are back on the field next Saturday against South Dakota. That game serves as the final warmup before No. 5 Alabama visits Madison on Sept. 14.

Texas A&M QB Conner Weigman struggles vs. Notre Dame

Texas A&M QB Conner Weigman, touted as a potential 1st-round prospect, struggled badly vs. Notre Dame

Conner Weigman had a lot of preseason buzz. The Texas A&M quarterback was hyped on several preseason watch lists and top prospect rankings for the 2025 NFL Draft.

In his 2024 season debut, Weigman looked nothing like an NFL prospect. Texas A&M couldn’t do much of anything against Notre Dame’s defense in the Fighting Irish’s 23-13 win in College Station. Much of that lack of offensive success stemmed from the quarterback.

Weigman was consistently off-target all night. He completed just 12 of his 30 pass attempts, netting just 100 passing yards. Easily rattled by pressure, Weigman threw two interceptions as well. The 21-year-old redshirt sophomore lacked composure and confidence in his throws.

[lawrence-related id=654442]

Many analysts expected Weigman to rise up into a potential first-round prospect now that Max Johnson transferred out of the Aggies program and left Weigman as the unquestioned top dog. Against Notre Dame, Weigman looked very much like a young, inexperienced QB with a very long was to go before even thinking about the NFL.

Former All-Pro Steelers RB says what (almost) everyone’s been thinking

Le’Veon Bell has thoughts on the Steelers quarterback situation.

Former First-team All-Pro and Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell, came to the defense of his former team and quarterback Russell Wilson on Thursday on social media.

Things got heated on Wednesday, as CBS Sports Analyst Pete Prisco offered criticism of the Steelers’ newly announced Week 1 starter, Russell Wilson, which many consider to be a freezing cold take.

Not only does Prisco believe Pittsburgh is the worst team in the AFC North, but Prisco argued that Russell Wilson was ‘barely’ better than the QB situation the Steelers found themselves in for 2023.

Le’Veon Bell begs to differ, however, with Bell questioning the integrity of the analysis. Bell took to social media and kept it very simple in his questioning of Prisco’s analysis.

Sarcasm aside, the stats also back up what Bell and the Steelers fandom already know about the differences between Pickett/Trubisky/Rudolph and former Super Bowl champion and 9-time Pro-Bowler Russell Wilson.

Jaylin Smith identity as USC Swiss Army knife will be tested

Jaylin Smith could be front and center in the back line against LSU.

Jaylin Smith, the 5-foot-11, 190-pound senior out of Bishop Alemany High School in California, is the “Swiss Army Knife” in D’Anton Lynn’s USC defense because of his versatility. Lincoln Riley had this to say about Smith’s role on the team in his weekly meeting with the media:

He’s a piece that gives us some versatility. We’ve worked him at some different positions throughout camp and spring [and] feel like he’s got the ability to to help us at different places. Certainly it’s been his emergence at corner I think has been a really positive thing for us so far, but I think he’s one of the pieces and we have a few in the secondary right now that we feel like give us some options. So I would imagine that you’ll see him all over the place at various times throughout the year.

He has shown that he can play every position in the secondary: he can play nickelback along with both corner and safety positions. The depth chart for Sunday’s matchup against the LSU Tigers came out his week and he was listed as a starting cornerback. The coverage and run stopping skills he honed in the safety room will make him a physical corner.  Players like Smith bring skill and depth to the 2024 Trojan secondary, which appears to be a strength on the team.
