Pitt vs Notre Dame Game Preview

Why Pitt Will Win

The Panthers are looking like a terrific NCAA Tournament team at just the right time.

The ACC might not be the ACC, but the 8-1 run has been impressive with one of the nation’s most consistent shooting teams – even if it’s not always great from the outside – with the volume threes mattering.

Notre Dame doesn’t force takeaways and doesn’t do anything on the move. Worse yet, it’s not able to get to the line enough to make up for the overall lack of scoring punch, but …

Why Notre Dame Will Win

The Irish will shoot their share of threes, too.

Granted, they do that to keep up the pace, but they’re able to hang around lately in losses by doing just enough from the outside to matter.

They’re not winning, but at home they’re stronger from the outside. Pitt hasn’t been great at stopping teams from the outside lately – Virginia Tech has allowed nine or more threes in five of the last six games – and it should give up a few more than it might like in this.

That, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Does Senior Night matter for the Irish? Yeah, because this is a team loaded with veterans, and that might mean a wee bit more of a battle in the final home game of the season.

Even with that, Pitt will be too consistent and too much as it fights through the emotion of the game to stay red hot.

Oklahoma vs Kansas State Game Preview

Why Oklahoma Will Win

Wow.

Every once in a while, Oklahoma has been able to pull off something brilliant.

It boatraced Alabama, rolled past Kansas State the first time around, and a few days ago went into Ames and all but knocked out Iowa State – or, at least dealt an NCAA Tournament body blow – in a shocking 61-50 win.

It’s a good enough team to be at least competitive, but it all comes down to whether or not it hits its shots. Some teams can overcome cold shooting games. Oklahoma can’t.

The Sooners are 9-1 when making at least half of their shots, and …

Why Kansas State Will Win

They’re 5-14 when they don’t.

Kansas State couldn’t keep the Sooner attack in check in the 79-65 loss, but that 51% shooting day allowed was an aberration.

19-2 when allowing teams to hit fewer than 45% of their shots, the pressure from the defense should keep the Sooners from making 11 threes.

The defense is amazing at guarding at the perimeter, the free throw shooting will be there, and the O won’t hit just 4-of-20 in this meeting.

That, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas State doesn’t lose at home.

It has a huge problem on the road, but in Manhattan, forget about it.

It dropped the date against Texas a few weeks ago, but that’s it. The defense takes everything up a few notches and the ability to control the tempo has been better.

Oklahoma’s offense will have to get out of the mud that Kansas State will drag it through. It won’t happen. There will be a few spurts, but not enough of them.

Chicago State vs Gonzaga Game Preview

Why Chicago State Will Win

The Cougars are playing well.

Get past the 11-18 record and the paycheck aspect to this lambs to the slaughter aspect. This might be a bit of a fight only because the Chicago State offense can crank it up.

There’s no hope of hanging out with Gonzaga inside, but the Cougar offense is fantastic at getting on the move, it’s going to take a whole lot of three San keep chucking, and the team that won six of its last seven games will bring a whole lot of effort and intensity.

But …

Why Gonzaga Will Win

Gonzaga still sort of needs this.

It’s Senior Night, but more than that, it’s about trying to lock in at least a 3 seed and maybe – with a lot of luck – a 2. That has to come from a huge showing in the West Coast Conference Tournament, but this is the tune-up after fighting through the huge battle with Saint Mary’s.

Chicago State can run, but it can’t hang on the boards, it turns it over a ton, and …

What’s Going To Happen

It’s going to be a plucky effort.

No, Gonzaga won’t keep all the main guys in after getting up big after a slew of fast break points, but the backups are going to try, too. Chicago State will get its share of big shots from the outside, and it’ll look to get on the move, but … nah.

This will be over after about 15 minutes.

Vanderbilt vs Kentucky Game Preview

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Well look at who wants to be a part of the NCAA Tournament fun.

It’s going to a minor miracle – like a win here, and then over Mississippi State, and then a deep run in the SEC Tournament just to get seriously in the discussion – but Vanderbilt has won six out of its last seven games.

Why? It’s a deep team that’s able to get production from a slew of spots, it’s making its threes, and it’s doing a great job of getting to the free throw line.

There might be a whole lot of flaws – there’s zero happening on the move because the defense does next to nothing to force takeaways – but it’s a team that finds ways to come up with that one key play on both ends to get by. But …

Why Kentucky Will Win

Well look at who wants to be a part of the NCAA Tournament fun.

The Wildcats woke up just in time with four straight wins to all but lock up a spot in the show. The scoring has improved, the extra passes are there to help improve the shooting percentage, and overall it’s playing like a team that knows the machine has turned on.

They beat Vandy the first time around helped by being +15 in rebounding margin, and they’re about to do it again. They’re crushing teams on the offensive boards lately, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Vanderbilt needs to hold its own on the boards to win. That’s not going to happen.

Neither defense forces a lot of mistakes, but Kentucky is much better on the move. At home, it’ll generate enough momentum to carry through a few second half lulls when the Commodore threes start to hit. It’ll be a rough landing, but UK will get there.

Xavier vs Providence Game Preview

Why Xavier Will Win

The Musketeers have been battling over the last month, but they’re still playing relatively well.

They’re moving the ball around better than anyone in America, they’re hitting their threes, and few in the Big East are better on the boards.

Now it’s all about cranking up the firepower. The best scoring offense in the conference is 18-1 when scoring 80 points or more and 21-2 when scoring more than 72 points. That includes 85 in the overtime win over Providence a few weeks ago.

The Providence defense is solid, it’s able to come up with stops from three, and …

Why Providence Will Win

Xavier’s offense has been slowed down a bit lately.

The attack might come up with points in bunches, but it’s 2-3 over the last five games with all three losses coming with the O failed to get to 70 points. A killer at home, Providence has yet to lose in Amica partly because the defense is turned up several notches.

The Friars haven’t allowed more than 76 points at home since early January and haven’t given up more than 65 in the last ten home dates. The team’s style is able to slow things down when needed, it’s better on the boards at both ends than Xavier is, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Providence hits its free throws.

It’s a good offense at getting to the line, and it makes them when it takes them. Again, the team is too good on at home and it should keep the score low enough to get this done to take over second place in the Big East.

It’ll be tight late, but again, the Providence free throw shooting will make a difference.

Texas vs TCU Game Preview

Why Texas Will Win

The Horned Frogs aren’t going to crank up a bazillion points.

It’s been a rough run, but they hit 100 in the win over Oklahoma State, and they went on the road and put up 83 on Texas Tech. Texas might be scuffling a bit, but the defense should be okay as long as it doesn’t let this get into a track meet.

TCU leads the nation in fast break points, but Texas doesn’t turn the ball over enough to allow too many quick baskets, and it’s too good at moving the ball around to not be in control of the clock.

It might sound basic, but TCU has to score to win. Duh, that’s the point, but the D isn’t good enough to hold up if the O isn’t going off.

TCU is 16-1 when scoring 75 points or more, and 3-8 when it doesn’t.

That one loss when it scored 75 or more came against …

Texas.

But …

Why TCU Will Win

Maybe the Horned Frogs will crank up a bazillion points.

The Texas defense hasn’t exactly locked it down lately. Baylor was able to go on a good run in the 81-72 win, Oklahoma put up 83 in an overtime loss, and Kansas and Tennessee both hit the 80s in wins..

Texas might be a high-scoring team that leads the Big 12 in points, but it’s 17-0 when allowing fewer than 74 points and 5-7 when giving up more.

TCU will get the tempo going a whole lot faster than it did in the home losses to Baylor and Kansas. As long as the offense hits 70 at home, it’ll be fine – it’s 11-0 when it does.

What’s Going To Happen

TCU will hit 70 points.

It might not want to get this going like it wants, but it’ll be a crazy environment, the offenses will trade big blows early on, and it’s going to be a fun battle that should be great throughout.

There will be a wee bit of a lull when everyone settles in, but TCU at home will be too sharp late. Texas won’t be able to avoid getting into a more up-tempo game, and TCU will be solid late on the line.

Steelers in contract talks with CB Cameron Sutton

Omar Khan offers a positive update on the contract talks with Cameron Sutton.

The top free-agent priority for the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason is cornerback Cameron Sutton. Sutton took over as the team’s top cornerback after Joe Haden retired and while he wasn’t elite, played solid. Sutton did it at exactly the right time as he now enters free agency.

General manager Omar Khan told the media on Tuesday that the team and Sutton have already started discussions to see if the two sides can come together on a new contract for the 28-year-old cornerback.

“We think very highly of Cam and conversations have commenced,” Khan said. “We’ll see where it goes, just like all of our other free agents. Everything is on the table.”

This contract will be the one that dictates the rest of the offseason. If the two sides cannot come together and Sutton leaves, the focus of the front office can no longer be on just improving the offensive line. Getting a top cornerback, whether that is via the draft of free agency, will also be a top priority.

Penn State at Northwestern basketball: Stream, injury report, broadcast info for Wednesday

Penn State needs a win at Northwestern on Wednesday to improve its tournament hopes. How to watch Wednesday’s game.

To say Penn State is in need of a big win is a bit of an understatement. With their tournament hopes hanging on the fence, things seemed to tip the wrong way in Penn State’s last game out, a home loss to Rutgers in which the Nittany Lions blew a big lead in the second half in a must-win game. Bouncing back may not come easily as Penn State travels to Northwestern, a program that is much more in line for an at-large spot in this year’s big dance with the Big Ten tournament looming next week.

Penn State and Northwestern are meeting for the first and only time during this regular season, although a possible second meeting could come up in the Big Ten tournament next week. But the Nittany Lions have struggled on the road in Big Ten play this season and a win would be a big way to dig out of the hole it dug following its recent loss to the Scarlet Knights.

Here is how to catch Jalen Pickett and the Nittany Lions on Wednesday evening from Evanston, Illinois on TV or live stream.

Texas A&M Womens golf wins the ICON Invitational in record setting fashion

The Aggie Women’s Golf team dominates the ICON Invitational

The No. 10 ranked Aggie Women’s golf team entered the ICON Invitational Tournament as the top-ranked team after Tuesday there was no doubt why. Two rounds in they wiped the 36-hole program record of 12-under, 564 with a 25-under, 551. Team records weren’t the only records broken on the first day, Junior Zoe Slaughter’s strong start and consistency produced -14 through 36 holes setting her own program record, which helped maintain a slight lead over Iowa State after the first day.

The final round was another day of record-setting. Once again Zoe would lead the team shooting a 68 in the final round and helping secure a dominant win with the Aggies coming in at -34 and North Texas in second place at -24. Slaughter’s -18 through 54 holes and the team -34 through 54 holes are both program records foreshadowing great things to come. Head coach Gerrod Chadwell gave his thoughts after the historic win

“Anytime you break a record it is amazing,” head coach Gerrod Chadwell said. “We didn’t play well the first time out this spring, but our team answered the challenge to get better these past two weeks. I got to walk 54 holes with Zoe (Slaughter) this tournament and it was great to see her be comfortable. She could have gotten rattled, but she stuck to the gameplan. Her performance was incredible, and she helped our team so much.”

Check out the social media reaction from the office Texas A&M Women’s Golf Twitter account:

Rutgers football extends an offer to Elijah King

Ohio defensive end Elijah King offered by Rutgers football this week.

It has been a busy few weeks for Elijah King as the three-star defensive end from Ohio is racking up multiple Power Five offers. The latest Power Five offer came on Monday night from Rutgers football.

King, a 6-foot-6, 230-pound defensive end from Gahanna Lincoln (Columbus, OH), has seen offers come in from Minnesota, Kentucky, West Virginia and Indiana over the past month. The class of 2024 recruit also holds Power Five offers from Cincinnati and Iowa State.

He is ranked a three-star recruit by 247Sports. He is the No. 65 recruit in Ohio and the No. 75 edge in the nation.

Gahanna is a powerhouse program in Ohio, finishing last season 13-2.

Rutgers has pulled in a couple of players from Ohio over the past few seasons. Kwabena Asamoah, an interior offensive lineman from Ohio, earned several starts for Rutgers in 2022 as a true freshman.

[lawrence-related id=24480]

Part of the 2023 recruiting class, Dom Rivera is a 6-foot-8, 315-pound offensive tackle from Olmstead Falls (Olmstead, OH). He picked Rutgers over offers that included Boston College, Iowa State and Syracuse.
