The Buffalo Bills have made a move at the 2023 NFL trade deadline.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Bills have acquired cornerback Rasul Douglas in a deal with the Green Bay Packers.
Spotrac reports that Buffalo also acquires a fifth-round draft pick in the agreement, which saw the Bills send the Packers a third-round selection.
Douglas was a third-round pick himself in 2017 by the Philadelphia Eagles. Douglas has bounced around the NFL a bit, having appeared in games for three other clubs.
The 28-year-old was in Philadelphia until 2019, before heading to the Carolina Panthers in 2020. He has been in Green Bay since 2021.
In his time with the Packers, Douglas has emerged as a starting-caliber cornerback. He has 10 interceptions over the past three seasons, third most in the NFL.
In 96 career games, Douglas has made 57 starts including in 28 of 36 outings in Green Bay. Douglas has notched 15 career interceptions.
Through seven weeks this season, Pro Football Focus had ranked Douglas as their best overall cornerback in the NFL. Currently his overall mark from the football analytics outlet sits at 75.2, which is immediately the best on the Bills.
It’s tough to imagine Douglas getting acclimated to Buffalo’s defense fast enough to start in Week 9 against the Cincinnati Bengals, but you never know. Douglas will sit at the top of the Bills’ depth chart alongside Christian Benford and Dane Jackson.
Prior to the deadline passing, Buffalo was connected to potentially trading for Chicago Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson but landed on Douglas. In addition, speculation pointed toward former first-round pick Kaiir Elam being moved by Buffalo, but he was not dealt.
Elam is now buried on the depth chart with Douglas being acquired.
Douglas is under contract through the 2024 season.
