The New York Giants have many needs heading into the 2023 NFL draft and rarely is quarterback discussed among them.
And why would it be? The Giants just signed Daniel Jones to a four-year, $160 million deal and have his backup, Tyrod Taylor, under contract through the 2023 season.
The problem facing general manager Joe Schoen is that there’s no longer a QB3 on the roster and with Taylor potentially leaving via free agency in 2024, the Giants are running quite thin. So with 10 picks in tow, why not spend one on a quarterback in Kansas City?
The Giants appear to be preparing for precisely that.
Throughout the offseason, they have met with several potential late-round quarterback prospects and one — Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker — who could be selected much earlier.
In addition to Hooker, who the Giants will use a top-30 visit on, they’ve also met with Houston’s Clayton Tune and Penn State’s Sean Clifford in addition to expressing interest in East Carolina’s Holton Ahlers.
These meetings aren’t coincidences and they aren’t merely due diligence. Schoen recognizes a need, however minimal it may be, and appears to be preparing himself for a late-round choice.
If and when a quarterback’s name is called later this month, don’t let it surprise you. It’s all about avoiding a larger problem down the road.
