Notre Dame soccer gets first win of 2021

Notre Dame picks up their first win of the young soccer season

The Notre Dame men’s soccer team picked up their first victory of the 2021 campaign Monday night with a 2-0 victory over Northern Illinois.

The Irish goals came from a pair of freshmen as Eno Nto and Matthew Roou both netted their first career collegiate goals.  Bryan Dowd stopped all five Northern Illinois shots he faced as the Irish move to 1-1 on the season.

Highlights from Monday night’s victory can be seen below.  Notre Dame is set to play again Friday night as they’ll travel to Lexington to take on Kentucky.

Cowboys Hard Knocks Episode 4 Breakdown: Show has new fatal flaw thanks to league schedule

The show returns with coverage between the Texans and Jaguars games and includes a Covid outbreak, team cookout, a comedy club routine, and Dak’s return. It still wasn’t as entertaining as one would hope. | From @KDDrummondNFL

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. For some, the Hard Knocks look into the world of the Dallas Cowboys’ 2021 training camp experience has been insightful. For others, there is a glaring missing ingredient: entertainment.

Episode 4 followed the tradition of the previous two episodes, being a stark contrast from the intriguing storylines that were mapped out in the first episode when the team first arrived in Oxnard, CA. Whether or not this has been the case throughout the last several years of the program is a verdict best left to others to decide. But objectively speaking, it feels like there are several storylines which wouldn’t jeopardize the privacy the team seeks in their game planning, that are being ignored.

This episode started with the defensive line being implored to be better self-motivators by new line coach Aden Durde. It was followed by special teams coach John Fassel having to host a virtual meeting due to a Covid outbreak that started with the team’s third preseason game when defensive coordinator Dan Quinn was removed along with DT Carlos Watkins before the action took place. Four more players would test positive and in total seven players would miss action.

Fortunately the team was able to resume in-person work a few days later, as the front office and coaching staff was faced with what would become the central failure of this year’s show; roster cuts.

It used to be that roster cuts were announced on a Saturday, but because of the new CBA and the addition of the 17th game, roster cuts happened on Tuesday, six hours before the episode premiered. The rest of the episode was spent highlighting the four underdog candidates’ the show has been profiling; OG Isaac Alarcon, DE Azur Kamara, RB JaQuan Hardy and QB Ben DiNucci.

Three of them had already been released by the time the show aired, however the show obviously didn’t have the time to include those cuts. The “Turk conversation” is one of the staples of the Hard Knocks series, but through no fault of their own, that was robbed from this season that was already missing storylines about the best players on the roster.

Watching Hardy being told by Skip Peete about the merits of grasping the opportunity afforded by RB3 Rico Dowdle’s season-ending injury afforded the foundation for the Turk moment, but that will not be aired until a week later, two days before the season kickoff and will not resonate in a meaningful way at that point.

The show then moved to Micah Parson’s cookout, where fans were treated to an absolutely abysmal Connect Four performance by linebacker Leighton Vander Esch.

One has to wonder about a player that gets dog walked to such a degree. One game he lost in three moves.

This is a good time to point out another episode went by without Jaylon Smith getting a sniff of airtime.

The action soon returned to the practice field where second-year corner Trevon Diggs had the audacity to claim that route technician Amari Cooper was going to go catchless in the team session. Big mistake. With Dak Prescott hyping the situation and securing a bet, Cooper went into blender mode, making a series of outstanding catches fans are accustomed to seeing that turned the corner every which way but up.

Prescott later, in team meetings, pitched the Prescott Pylon game with plans of making big money. This segued into Prescott’s return to full practice after being sidelined for weeks with his throwing shoulder strain. It was a great but brief update into the most important storyline of camp. One may have wanted to get even more Prescott action in this series, or any of the other “return” storylines this team has a gluttony of, but oh well.

Here’s where things kind of went off the rail as Tarrell Basham, who had everyone laughing during Episode 1, got on stage to do standup comedy act at a private event. And then they showed his stand up redo in the meeting room where the subject of his impression, DeMarcus Lawrence, walked in during his performance, throwing him off his game.

A trip to the Cowboys store for Azur Kamara and his family was next.

Mike McCarthy’s shirt and dance moves took center stage next in the final team meeting before the preseason finale against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He reminded players that several of them were not going to suit up for a football game again after that Sunday. Production then went straight to McCarthy naming Alarcon a captain for the game.

The game action was what it was, as Jacksonville played their starters against the Cowboys reserves and even the worst team in 2020 should dominate those matchups, which the Jaguars did. Fans were saddled with having to hear an Eye of the Tiger cover overlay.

Ezekiel Elliott once again starred from the sideline as he doesn’t play in preseason action, along with Hardy who has ditched his “EDs” or “rec specs” in favor of contact lenses again. Elliott’s support of his backfield mate, along with Prescott’s swagger are glimpses into the personalities of the club’s biggest personalities.

The series would’ve been better served with, not necessarily more shots of them, but more similar content from other players.

Perhaps the Cowboys are just a more boring organization compared to year’s past, but that’s hard to believe. Lawrence is hardly showcased and big personalities like Jourdan Lewis are rarely shown at all.

The wonderful moms of the underdog guys took over the show from the stands. Alarcon’s mom was fierce in her cheering while Kamara’s mom’s elegance with her high-pitched “Azuuuuuur” calls had to make everyone watching smile at her pride in her son.

Lawrence delivered a great line talking to his teammates who may not be with the Cowboys much longer, stating, “It’s time like this, days like this you have to risk it all. Hey, one team don’t want you don’t mean 31 other teams don’t want you. Go make them plays, baby!”

In the too little, too late department, DiNucci led a late touchdown drive that culminated in a scoring pass to Johnnie Dixon, who also was released earlier on Tuesday. “Too [expletive] late, I got to play better” DiNucci mused, knowing his fate was already sealed based on his prior performances.

That was the end of the show, but in the closing credits Jerry Jones had to get his requisite commercial in, flipping the coin in the inaugural Jerry Jones Classic high school game and a testimonial to the Whataburger that came straight from the pitchman’s handbook.

Someone should check how much stock he has there.

WATCH: Boston Celtics All-Star forward Jayson Tatum is JACKED

How will Tatum’s new physique impact his play next season?

If you haven’t been on social media for a hot second, you might have missed the eyebrow-raising images of Boston Celtics All-Star small forward Jayson Tatum working out and looking absolutely jacked while he does it.

It seems like just yesterday the Celtics drafted a skinny, awkward teenager out of Duke with the third pick of the 2017 NBA draft, but the St. Louis native has really packed on the muscle since, particularly since last season ended evidently. The hosts of the CLNS Media podcast “Boston Sports Beat” A. Sherrod Blakely and John Zannis got on the horn to talk what Tatum’s new physique might mean for his 2021-22 season.

They also spend some time breaking down what’s been going on with Atlantic Division rival Philadelphia 76ers’ Ben Simmons on the trade front and more.

Watch the video embedded above to get the scoop on Boston’s most jacked forward in the post Semi Ojeleye era, and much more.

News: Some Cowboys still on roster bubble, another COVID add, considering Cam?

Several will have survived “final” cuts only temporarily to make room for returning COVID players; will the Saints use Cowboys’ home field? | From @ToddBrock24f7

Cowboys fans ended their Tuesday night with another episode of the reality series Hard Knocks, but several players lived it in true living color just hours earlier. So-called “final” roster cuts were the big story of the day, with two dozen players either released or waived. Some were axed only as a technicality and will be back within days; others made it onto the 53-man roster only as a temporary stay. We’re analyzing every move at every position as the true 2021 roster continues to take shape.

Within that, several interesting subplots. What- if anything at all- should Cam Newton’s release by the Patriots mean for the Cowboys’ backup quarterback situation? Which injured Cowboys will have to give up their roster spots to players coming off the COVID watchlist? And who just got put on that list?  The ’21 draft class continues an impressive streak in Dallas, an undrafted reality show winner gets the leading-man treatment in the incredible true story of his life, the Cowboys’ next big defensive star hooks up with one of the club’s past greats, our player profiles focus on the rising secondary, and Dez Bryant makes another clutch catch. That’s all on tap in this edition of News and Notes.

On this day: Howell/Counts trade; Seminoff, Gomes born; Cs beat Raps in Game 2 of Disney bubble 2nd round

On this day, the Boston Celtics traded Bailey Howell for Mel Counts, former Celtics Jm Seminoff and Ryan Gomes were born, and the team beat the Raps in the bubble.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the storied franchise traded for big man Bailey Howell, sending center Mel Counts to the (then) Baltimore Bullets (now, Washington Wizards).

Counts, who played collegiately at Oregon State, was drafted by the Celtics with the seventh pick of the 1964 NBA draft. He won a title in each of his two seasons with Boston while averaging 6.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.

Howell had played for Mississippi State collegiately and had been drafted by the Detroit Pistons, playing there before his stint with the Bullets. The Tennessee native played four seasons as a Celtic, part of an eventual Hall of Fame career in the NBA.

He won two titles with Boston, logging 18 points and 8.4 boards per contest over his four seasons as a Celtic.

LSU (0-0) vs UCLA (1-0) Game Preview

Why LSU Will Win

LSU is going to be good again.

No, it’s not the 2019 version that ripped through the college football world on the way to the national title, but it’s also not going to be the rebuilding 2020 version that tried hard but had way too many problems on both sides of the ball.

QB Max Johnson has been in big games and big moments in his limited time in the system, and he should get time behind a big line full of NFL prospects and future SEC all-stars.

It’s the other side of the ball that should be the big difference.

The defense that totally crashed and burned last year gets a new coordinator in Daronte Jones, but it returns what should be the best corner pair in college football in Derek Stingley Jr. and Eli Ricks.

The secondary might have struggled last season overall, but it came up with a whole lot of picks and it’s about to be helped more by an improved pass rush.

UCLA might have been great in the 44-10 win over Hawaii, but it got away with a rough day from QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson. He only hit half of his passes for 130 yards and a touchdown as the running game and defense took over in the win, but …

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

Why UCLA Will Win

DTR is better than he showed on Saturday. That’s why you schedule Hawaii to start the season instead of LSU – the hope is for the kinks to be worked out and the timing to be down now.

Even with the passing attack off, the Bruin offense worked thanks to a huge day from the O line and top running backs. Brittain Brown ran for 78 yards and a touchdown and Michigan transfer Zach Charbonnet ripped off 106 yards and three touchdowns on six carries.

No, UCLA won’t run for 244 yards and four scores on LSU, but as the Week 0 game showed, the lines are in place to battle with a team as good as what’s coming to Pasadena.

Week 1 College Football Schedule, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

UCLA will come out red hot.

The defense will be flying all over the field, Thompson-Robinson will be great on his first two drives, and social media will be all over the Bruins as they get out to an early lead.

But LSU will work their way back.

They lines will start to take over as the game goes on, the secondary will clamp down and pick off a few passes, and Johnson will overcome a mediocre first half with a great final 30 minutes.

UCLA will look great against a terrific team, but it’s not going to have quite enough to pull off the win in the final ten minutes. It’ll have two late drives with take the momentum back, but LSU will hold firm on both of them.

Where are the Buffalo Bills in the waiver wire order?

Where are the Buffalo #Bills in the waiver wire order?

The Buffalo Bills trimmed their roster down to 53 players on Tuesday ahead of the NFL’s 4 p.m. deadline.

But the Bills weren’t alone. The rest of the NFL had to do so as well and a slew of players hit the wavier wire and can be claimed.

Could there potentially be players that the Bills have interest in claiming on Wednesday? If they do, they’ll really have to hope that said player falls through the cracks in a big way.

The wavier wire order is actually very deep… it’s essentially the same order from the end of last season and the one used at the 2021 NFL draft.

Here’s the order of the waiver priority list, which sees the Bills near the bottom:

  1. Jaguars
  2. Jets
  3. Texans
  4. Falcons
  5. Bengals
  6. Eagles
  7. Lions
  8. Panthers
  9. Broncos

Steelers DL Stephon Tuitt could be headed to IR

The Steelers could start the season without one of its best defensive players.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbydbzmnr1bhxef player_id=none image=https://steelerswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Pittsburgh Steelers beat writer Gerry Dulac is reporting that the Pittsburgh Steelers are considering putting defensive end Stephon Tuitt on the Injured/Reserve list to start the 2021 NFL season.

Tuitt has been absent for the entirety of the Steelers training camp and preseason dealing with an injury so this move makes perfect sense. It also lines up perfectly, as Dulac pointed out with the Steelers opting to keep an extra defensive lineman on their initial 53-man roster.

If the Steelers put Tuitt on IR, he would be able to return in Week Three by rule. The key to getting a player off IR early is for them to be on the 53-man roster after final cuts.

Tuitt has been the unsung hero on the Steelers defense and is grossly underrated by non-Steeler fans. Last season, Tuitt was dominant with 11 sacks in 15 games but you rarely hear his name among the top 3-4 defensive linemen in the league. The Steelers defense would take a hit if Tuitt has to miss an extended period of time this season.

Clemson offer ‘would mean everything’ to highly regarded Georgia OL

This top offensive line prospect has come a long way in the recruiting process.

As a high school freshman, Johnathan “Bo” Hughley didn’t own a single scholarship offer. Now, as a junior, the four-star offensive tackle from Langston Hughes High School (Fairburn, Ga.) holds more than a dozen offers and is considered one of the top players at his position — and a top-75 national prospect in the 2023 class regardless of position — by multiple recruiting services.

“Everything’s been going perfect actually,” Hughley said of the recruiting process in a recent interview with The Clemson Insider. “In my ninth-grade year, I didn’t have any offers, and for me to gain as many offers as I could from 10th grade to the beginning of my 11th-grade [year] is awesome. So, everything’s been going good.”

Hughley is ranked as the No. 5 offensive tackle and No. 60 overall prospect in the 2023 class by Rivals, while ESPN touts him as the No. 6 OT and No. 68 overall prospect in his class. According to the 247Sports Composite, he is the No. 6 OT and No. 72 overall prospect in the class.

The 6-foot-7, 290-pounder had a busy summer traveling around the South to check out a bunch of schools, including Clemson. He competed at the Dabo Swinney Camp in June and got attention from offensive line coach Robbie Caldwell while on campus.

“When I went, I did the camp first,” Hughley said. “It was two parts of the camp. During the little break part, the coaches took me — and I was with a couple of my teammates, so they were with me — and we did a tour around the school, tried on uniforms, etcetera. And the conversation we were having with the coaches, I was really blessed that he [Caldwell] came to me personally for a conversation, and out of the whole group, I stood out to him. The bond I feel like I could build with the coaches would be great.”

Caldwell gave Hughley’s camp showing positive reviews, while also sending him home with feedback that Hughley could use to improve his game as an offensive lineman.

“He was telling me how he liked my camp performance, but he gave me some tips on what I could work on,” Hughley said.

The coaching Hughley received at the camp from not only Caldwell and Clemson’s staff, but also some of the current players that worked the camp, stood out to him and told him a lot about the coaches.

“The players were coaching us, and it’s great that the players can take the knowledge that they’ve learned from practice and camps and come put it in and help the youth,” Hughley said. “That shows a lot about the coaching. It shows that the coaches are actually coaching and showing the players how to play the game of football.”

Along with Clemson, Hughley visited schools such as Georgia, Georgia Tech, Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss, North Carolina and North Carolina A&T this summer.

Hughley’s offer list includes Georgia, Georgia Tech, Auburn, Ole Miss, Florida State, Miami, UCF, Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Pittsburgh and West Virginia among others.

Hughley plans to narrow things down sometime during his junior year but doesn’t intend to commit until his senior year in 2022. As of now, he says “everything’s still wide open” in his recruitment.

Hughley has learned that Clemson takes the recruiting process slower than most schools, so he is staying patient as he keeps his fingers crossed for a potential offer from the Tigers down the road.

“Clemson is one of the schools I’m waiting on to offer me,” he said.

“Honestly, it would mean everything,” he added of a Clemson offer. “I have dreamed about going to Clemson.”

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Washington (0-0) vs Montana (0-0) Game Preview

Why Montana Will Win

The Grizzlies came up with a dominant two performances in the FCS spring session, beating Central Washington and Portland State by a combined score of 107-10.

It’s a small sample size, but Montana really is that good. Now it has to prove over the course of the season that it can be more consistent than it was in 2019 – it skipped 2020.

It didn’t generate much of a pass rush over the two games, but the run D was a rock all as the offense took control of games right away and pounded them out from there.

Washington is a different animal than Central Washington and Portland State, but there’s enough experience and developed talent on both sides to provide a push against an offense that was fine, but a tad careful.

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

Why Washington Will Win

The Huskies played a controlled style last year in the first full run under head coach Jimmy Lake, relying on the defense to take over. The offensive side, though, should be stronger.

Dylan Morris has the starting quarterback job to himself, and he doesn’t have to do it alone with a great group of backs working behind a nasty offensive front that should be among the best in the Pac-12.

Run, don’t let Morris take any big chances, rely on the defense that will be even nastier after leading the Pac-12 in 2020. Repeat.

Week 1 College Football Schedule, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Montana is hardly a pushover FCS team – it’s a great opponent for the Huskies to deal with before going to Michigan.

Washington’s offense will sputter and struggle a little bit, but the lines will soon take over, the running game will be good, and the defense will be a brick wall.
