Florida releases guidelines for its student-athletes regarding NIL

The student-athletes wait to be paid is finally over with NIL laws going into effect Thursday. Florida released guidelines regarding NIL.

Florida’s name, image and likeness bill will finally be enacted Thursday after a year of waiting since the legislation was passed. With the swift arrival of July 1, Florida’s University Athletic Associated released its guidelines on June 27 for student-athletes and their endorsements and compensation.

These guidelines will not interfere with the bill the state of Florida passed, and it will allow student-athletes to profit off third-party endorsement deals using their name, image and likeness separate from the university.

The first bullet point states what these student-athletes can be compensated for, according to FloridaGators.com.

The second one reads: “The University of Florida, the athletic department, staff members or boosters may not compensate or arrange compensation to a current or prospective intercollegiate athlete for her or his name, image, likeness.”

Some restrictions that the Gators laid out involving NIL compensation deals is that none of them can interfere with team or class schedules or events. Athletes are only allowed to use university- or athletic-related marks and logos. The UAA said facilities from the school can be used with prior approval and waiver forms handled by the operations department. Florida athletes can’t enter agreements that extend beyond their time with the school or agreements with gambling, sports wagering and performance-enhancing drug vendors.

Finally, all name, image and likeness agreements must be disclosed to the UAA within four days. Student-athletes are also only allowed to use Florida state-licensed lawyers and members in good standing of The Florida Bar as legal representation for name, image and likeness matters only.

Video: Who should Fedor Emelianenko fight in his Bellator return?

Our “Spinning Back Clique” discusses who Fedor Emelianenko should face when he returns to action later this year.

[autotag]Fedor Emelianenko[/autotag] is set to make his return to the cage.

Bellator announced last weekend that the legendary heavyweight will compete for the first time in nearly two years. While the announcement included a date and location for the fight, an opponent has not yet been determined.

Should it be someone he’s already faced? Would he be interested in getting one back on the likes of Fabricio Werdum, Matt Mitrione, or Antonio Silva?

Sporting News early bowl projections call for new bowl game for Notre Dame

Would you be alright with this being Notre Dame’s postseason berth?

The Peach Bowl has been played since 1968 but never has Notre Dame appeared in it.  If The Sporting News college bowl projections wind up being true, that streak will come to an end.

Their projections have the Irish taking on Texas A&M on December 30 in the Chik-Fil-A Peach Bowl, the first of the New Year’s Six bowl games for the 2021 college football bowl season.

It would also be Notre Dame’s first time playing Texas A&M since 2001 if the projection were to play out.

The Irish are in a place right now where the fan base is looking for the next step, not a step back.  It’d obviously be disappointing in a way to not get to the College Football Playoff, even with the massive overhaul on the depth chart, but getting to a very winnable New Year’s Six game would be a pretty impressive “down” year.

Riley Reiff projected as Bengals’ MVP in 2021

Does Riley Reiff have a shot at being Cincinnati Bengals MVP?

[mm-video type=video id=01f60v7f5de31h3n41fq playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f60v7f5de31h3n41fq/01f60v7f5de31h3n41fq-165c918732918ecdd2b07545b4385657.jpg]

Cincinnati Bengals right tackle Riley Reiff has managed to fly under the radar so far.

Reiff projects to be a big upgrade on the right side of the offensive line after coming over via free agency to replace the now-cut Bobby Hart.

But that big upgrade has been a bit swept aside in the hype department as the broad outlook focuses on Joe Burrow’s rehab and fifth-overall pick Ja’Marr Chase, if not the big money spent on someone like Trey Hendrickson, too.

But NFL.com’s Adam Rank isn’t overlooking it — he’s projecting Reiff to be the team MVP in 2021:

“Signing Reiff this offseason was a huge move for the Bengals. He’s a big upgrade over his predecessor, Bobby Hart. Some of the Bengals’ moves this offseason were kind of like the equivalent of replacing an older couch with a newer one that is basically the same as the old one. But adding Reiff was like getting a TV for the bathroom. The sort of thing you didn’t know you needed until you actually did it. Readers who are also parents know what I mean.”

Maybe Reiff won’t be as great as a TV in the bathroom, but if he plays a big part in making sure Burrow never gets hurt again, it’ll go down as one of the low-key best signings of free agency.

That said, the Bengals have plenty of possible MVPs to list, highlighted by Burrow and Chase. Maybe it even turns out to be Jonah Williams at the left tackle spot.

Either way, it sure doesn’t hurt to see some national optimism for the Bengals and a spotlight on an upgrade that deserves more attention.

Watch: Phil Mickelson displays some gamesmanship with Bryson DeChambeau as next Match approaches

Phil Mickelson displayed a bit of gamesmanship toward Bryson DeChambeau during a practice round for the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

The grudge match pitting Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady against Bryson DeChambeau and Aaron Rodgers is still a week away, but Mickelson is starting to get serious – or at least, mock serious.

In a classic Phil move, Mickelson displayed a bit of gamesmanship during a practice round for the Rocket Mortgage Classic. As he stood on the back of a tee box watching Bryson DeChambeau tee off, he casually reached into DeChambeau’s bag, pulled an 8-iron and, er, reshaped it a bit.

Mickelson later posted the act to Twitter, along with the wish that DeChambeau had plenty of cause to hit 8-iron this week.

DeChambeau is the defending champion at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Mickelson, of course, is just a month removed from winning the PGA Championship.

It’s not as if DeChambeau hasn’t already poked the bear regarding the upcoming match. Shortly after the teams were announced in May, DeChambeau commented to Golfweek, “Phil outdrive me at The Match? There is no way.”

The fourth edition of the event will air on TNT on July 6 and be played at The Reserve at Moonlight Basin in Big Sky, Montana.

Bleacher Report proposes Eric Bledsoe-Collin Sexton trade for New Orleans Pelicans

In a proposed trade by Bleacher Report, the Pelicans would part with Eric Bledsoe and this year’s No. 10 pick for Cavs guard Collin Sexton.

The New Orleans Pelicans offseason is a vital one for multiple reasons. On top of being in a salary cap crunch that could see them lose one or both of their restricted free agent guards in Lonzo Ball and Josh Hart, the team also is on a balancing act of dealing with a potentially upset Zion Williamson.

The result could mean the Pelicans may begin using some of the assets acquired through trades of Anthony Davis and Jrue Holiday to begin shaping a more competitive roster. Bleacher Report suggested one trade the team could make that would accomplish both sending away a player that struggled last season as well as bringing in a talented one in his place.

The trade suggested by Greg Swartz would see the Pelicans trade Eric Bledsoe, the No. 10 pick in the upcoming NBA draft and the Lakers’ 2022 first round draft pick to Cleveland for Collin Sexton and Taurean Prince.

In theory, there are a couple of reasons why this deal could work. First, reports surfaced recently that the Pelicans were open to trading the No. 10 pick in search of a win-now upgrades. Bledsoe’s season in New Orleans went about as poorly as possible as it became clear he was not a good fit next to Williamson and Brandon Ingram.

For Cleveland, Jeremy Woo of Sports Illustrated reported that the Cavs had begun exploring trade options for the 22-year-old guard. Entering the final year of his rookie deal before heading into restricted free agency, Sexton’s future is in question as well after Cleveland landed the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NBA draft.

Sexton would provide the Pelicans a lead ballhandler, which could potentially allow them to part ways with Lonzo Ball this summer as well. At 37.1% last season, Sexton was a better 3-point shooter than Bledsoe but still only right at league average. However, his ability to create offense would be a huge improvement in the backcourt for New Orleans.

While it may not be exactly this deal, the Pelicans could look to package the 10th pick with Bledsoe for an improvement and a salary dump both.

Seahawks Chris Carson ranked only 19th-best RB1 in NFL

Seattle Seahawks starting running back, Chris Carson, ranks in the bottom half of RB1s across the league heading into the 2021 NFL season.

The Seattle Seahawks might be all about the run game, but their starting running back, Chris Carson, ranks in the bottom half of RB1s across the league heading into the 2021 NFL season.

NFL.com analyst and former All-Pro running back, Maurice Jones-Drew, listed Carson at No. 19 overall compared to the other starters around the NFL.

Health remains the No. 1 concern.

“The Seahawks adopt the Rams’ offense with the arrival of new offensive coordinator Shane Waldron, who was an assistant for Sean McVay in L.A. for the past four years,” Jones-Drew starts. “That bodes well for Carson because the running lanes will be there for him. The thing is, Carson has to be available. It’s great that he’s averaged 4.6 yards per carry for his career, but what good does it do if you’re not on the field? He missed 19 games in first four NFL seasons. Can Carson stay healthy in 2021?”

It’s clearly too early to predict things just yet but staying in top shape should remain Carson’s top priority.

Cardinals LT D.J. Humphries named one of top OTs in NFL

After having a career year in 2020, Arizona Cardinals tackle D.J. Humphries is recognized as a top-10 tackle in the NFL. See where he ranks!

Arizona Cardinals left tackle D.J. Humphries had a great season last year in 2020. He arguably should have been a Pro Bowler, although that is hard when he plays in the same conference as perennial Pro Bowlers Trent Williams and David Bakhtiari.

But in this year’s rankings of the top 11 tackles in the NFL from Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar, Humphries not only cracks the top 11, he comes in at No. 7.

The Cardinals took Humphries out of Florida with the 24th pick in the 2015 draft, and he didn’t appear NFL-ready out of the gate, allowing nine sacks and 46 total pressures in his rookie campaign. But over the last two seasons in Kliff Kingsbury’s offense, Humphries has allowed a total of five sacks and 53 pressures, and he was especially on point last season, with three sacks, two quarterback hits, and 18 quarterback hurries allowed, and strong performances when the Cardinals decided to run the ball.

On this Week 15 rep against Eagles edge-rusher Genard Avery that ends up as a Kyler Murray 45-yard pass to DeAndre Hopkins, watch how Humphries mirrors Avery perfectly from side to side, allowing no pressure leaks.

Add in his formidable ability to separate pass rushers from their intentions with his strong hands, and improved run-blocking, and it’s become clear that Humphries should not be ignored as one of the NFL’s better left tackles.

Humphries has come a long way since his disappointing rookie season. He has stayed healthy the last two years and has developed into a great tackle.

At this rate, he is on track to be a Cardinals lifer, something we haven’t seen from a left tackle since Luis Sharpe.
