Iowa State AD discusses Big 12 forfeit, no-contest protocols

Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard discussed the Big 12’s protocols for no-contests and forfeits in the 2020 season on Monday.

Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard discussed the Big 12’s protocols for no-contests and forfeits in the 2020 season on Monday.

The most notable protocol: each team will construct a 53-man roster with certain minimum amounts at each position. Each team will administer an antigen test on the Friday before the game. A negative test will certify each player for eligibility that weekend.

“As long as you have at least 53 players certified to play and you have the minimum number at every one of those positions comprising the 53 [man roster], then you have to play,” said Pollard.

If a team has less than 53 certified players, than the game will be called a no-contest. Attempts will be made at rescheduling, but the result will not count against the team without a complete roster.

“The first step would be to try and reschedule during one of the bye dates,” Pollard said. “But if not, it doesn’t technically count against the team that ends up with the no contest. But it was a uniform policy that we wanted to adopt to, in essence, take some gamesmanship out of what could happen potentially later in the year.”

Behind the heroics of Chris Paul, Thunder beat Rockets to force Game 7

Vintage CP3 made an appearance in Game 6 on Monday night as the Thunder beat the Rockets to force Game 7 on Wednesday.

Chris Paul and the Oklahoma City Thunder were trailing the Houston Rockets by six points with three and a half minutes to go in what could have been their final game of the season. What followed next was vintage CP3 at his best.

With Robert Covington on him, a former NBA All-Defensive First Team player, Paul drilled back-to-back 3-pointers to tie up the game. Paul later hit two clutch free throws to put the Thunder up for good with 13.1 seconds left in the game.

Paul scored 28 points, including 15 alone in the fourth quarter, to lead the Thunder to the 104-100 victory on Monday and force Game 7 on Wednesday night. He shot 10-of-20 from the field and made 3-of-6 from 3-point range with each triple coming in the final period.

The Thunder trailed by as many as nine points in the third quarter but went on a 16-3 run to come back and take the lead. After struggling mightily in Game 5, Thunder rookie Luguentz Dort went on a personal 8-0 run to end the third period as he finished with 13 points in the contest.

Dort got into early foul trouble in the first quarter after getting whistled three times in the period. He sat for the entire second quarter before he returned with 10 points alone in the third period. Instead of getting down on himself, he came back and helped the Thunder stay alive.

The Thunder have emerged as the best team in crunch-time situations this season and the group once again proved that they are not done until the final buzzer. Paul & Co. will need to replicate that magic one more time to advance to the second round and play the Los Angeles Lakers.

LeBron says to ‘put respect’ on Chris Paul’s name after epic Game 6 win

LeBron James was hyped to see his friend Chris Paul deliver an epic playoff performance facing elimination.

LeBron James had plenty of reason to celebrate while watching his friend Chris Paul put together an All-Time 4th quarter to help the Oklahoma City Thunder stave off elimination on Monday night. For one, Paul’s performance gave the Lakers another few days of rest as his 28 points, including 15 in the 4th quarter, forced a Game 7 between the Thunder and the Houston Rockets on Wednesday. But it also gave LeBron an opportunity to celebrate one of his best and longest friends in the league having a big night, even though many wrote the Paul and the Thunder off before the season began.

In addition to his amazing play on Monday night, Paul has been extremely busy off the court, even more so over the past week, as the President of the NBPA. With Paul and the Thunder forcing a Game 7 on Wednesday, the winner of that game will start their second-round series against the Lakers on Friday night.

Steve Kerr: Kevin Durant ‘most talented basketball player I’ve ever seen’

Steve Kerr played with Michael Jordan. He’s coached against LeBron James. Neither is the most talented basketball player Kerr has ever seen.

[jwplayer Zg3Q0LD9-z6KDnl0B]

Steve Kerr has dealt with a fair share of impressive basketball players since he was taken in the second round of the 1988 NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns.

He played with Michael Jordan in Chicago. He saw his teammates try to handle Hakeem Olajuwon. He has to game plan against LeBron James. He’s still coaching Stephen Curry, who has revolutionized shooting in the game.

But only one player can be the most talented player of all time. As far as Kerr is concerned, he’s not giving that title to any of those four players — not even MJ.

That honor, instead, belongs to Kevin Durant.

Kerr deemed the Brooklyn Nets forward “the most talented basketball player I’ve ever seen in my life,” when factoring in “everything: size, speed, athleticism,” per Logan Murdock of The Ringer.

Kerr also stated Durant is “very coachable,” adding:

He was a sponge, especially the first year, he wanted to learn a new style… I think he really enjoyed playing the way we played, and he was really easy to coach. When a star makes it easy, for a coach to do his job, he just allows everything to click. And so, that first year, I think one of the reasons we were so dominant was because we had that dynamic across the board between Steph, Klay, Draymond, Kevin, we had it all lined up and everybody was on board and clicking, and it was a smooth ride.
