[autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag] got a huge win Saturday against [autotag]Joseph Benavidez[/autotag] in the UFC on ESPN+ 27 main event.
However, it didn’t get him a belt, as he missed weight on Friday. While Benavidez would have won the flyweight title with a victory, Figueiredo was ineligible, and thus the belt remains vacant.
The once-beaten Brazilian Figueiredo (18-1 MMA, 7-1 UFC) scored a second-round TKO victory over Benavidez (28-6 MMA, 15-4 UFC) in the headlining bout, which took place at Chartway Arena in Norfolk, Va.

The Los Angeles Lakers saw seven-game win-streak snap on Saturday night against the Memphis Grizzlies as Memphis also snapped a five-game losing streak as they defeated the Los Angeles Lakers, 105-88.
LeBron James returned to the court after missing Thursday’s game, finishing with 19 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds in the loss. Anthony Davis had 15 points, nine rebounds and four assists in the loss while the Grizzlies got a major win as they look to hold on to the 8th spot in the Western Conference playoffs.

The only players off of the Lakers bench who scored in double-figure were Kyle Kuzma (10) and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (11). Now the Lakers head to New Orleans on Monday for what should likely be another heated match-up against Zion Williamson and the Pelicans.

CSU gains momentum heading into the Mountain West tournament.
Both teams were coming into this game off of close results in their previous contests. Air Force won a close contest over New Mexico, while Colorado State lost a heart breaker against the Aztecs. This time it was the Rams earning a convincing victory heading into the Mountain West tournament.
On a day that was supposed to be about the seniors, it was a sophomore who stole the show. Kendle Moore had himself a day finishing with 21 points on 7-11 shooting. All of Moore’s attempts came from behind the arc. It wasn’t all individual effort for the Rams, as they finished with 25 assists on 29 made baskets.
The Rams seniors had a quiet day themselves. Nico Carvacho was the leading senior on the day finishing with 12 points and six rebounds. Kris Martin finished with six points and Hyron Edwards finished with two points and five assists.

Air Force had trouble taking off today. A slow start turned into a 14 point deficit at halftime. The engines seemed to wake up in the second half as they were able to outscore the Rams, but the Falcons couldn’t do enough to hold off Colorado State.
The Falcons had three players finish in double figures. They were led by Lavelle Scottie who finished with 20 points. Joining him in double figures were A.J. Walker with 15 points and Ryan Swan with 12 points. Swan also grabbed 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double.

Nets drop fourth straight with 116-113 loss to Heat
The Brooklyn Nets had a chance to win on their final possession in Miami, but the Heat wound up victorious.
For the third time in their last four games, the Brooklyn Nets had a heartbreaking loss — the exception being the blowout in Atlanta.
Against the Orlando Magic on Monday, the Nets had a chance to win on the final possession. Same thing happened against the Washington Wizards on Wednesday.
After getting blown out by the Atlanta Hawks on Friday, the Nets had an opportunity to steal a win in Miami on the final possession, but Brooklyn struggled to run a play effectively and Spencer Dinwiddie threw an errant pass into the stands. Following a foul on the ensuing possession, the Heat were able to finish things off their 116-113 win.
Dinwiddie logged another double-double, finishing with a team-high 25 points and 12 assists.

Julio Cesar Martinez outpoints Jay Harris in first flyweight title defense
Julio Cesar Martinez beat Jay Harris in a much more closely contested fight than was reflected in the judges scorecards Saturday night…
Julio Cesar Martinez didn’t get the stoppage that most expected him to get for his first defense of his flyweight title, but he put up a dominating performance anyway.
In a fervent 12-rounder, Martinez out-slugged untested Jay Harris, dropping him once en route to a unanimous decision win Saturday night at Ford Center at The Star in Frisco Texas on the Mikey Garcia-Jesse Vargas card.Β
The judges scored it 118-109, 116-111 and 115-112, all for the 25-year-old Martinez, who had previously never gone the distance in a 12-round bout.
“Thank God, it was a very tough battle,” said Martinez, who earned his flyweight trinket by defeating Cristofer Rosales in a vacant title shot in December.Β “I’ll defend this title many times. There is no fear right here.”
An entertaining offensive fighter who throws punches with abandon, Martinez (16-1, 12 KOs) started off fast and appeared to be on track for an early stoppage.Β But Harris (17-1, 9 KOs), from Swansea, Wales, was far more game than expected. While his head snapped back repeatedly from Martinez’s hard-winging shots early on, Harris was able to put up a decent fight in the second half of the bout. He worked diligently behind a jab and consistently answered Martinez’s flurries with his own combinations. Harris also repeatedly dug himself out of holes. In Round 7, Harris looked as though he was going to get stopped, but he fought back to arguably win the round.
Martinez’s commitment to the body paid off thirty seconds into Round 10, when he landed a hard left and right to the flanks that forced Harris to take a knee. Nevertheless, Harris was able to beat the count.
Asked if Harris surprised him at all, Martinez said, “Harris is a very strong fighter. I know that’s why he was undefeated.”
A possible matchup could be a unification against Japan’s Kosei Tanaka.
Chargers’ Derwin James reacts to Isaiah Simmons’ blazing 40-yard dash
Derwin James had to give kudos to Isaiah Simmons for an outstanding feat on Saturday.
Day 3 of the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine featured the defensive linemen and linebackers.
Arguably the biggest highlight that caught the attention of all 32 NFL teams, as well as players in the league, including Chargers safety Derwin James was Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons.
Go crazy @isaiahsimmons25βΌοΈTrue story he was running 4.35βs electric when I seen him at @proactivesp training.
— Derwin James Jr (@DerwinJames) March 1, 2020
Simmons ran a 4.39-second 40-yard dash, which was tied for the fifth-fastest time of any player at any position through Saturday.
That time is the second-fastest a linebacker has achieved since 2006. He was just .01 seconds behind the fastest in that time frame, a 4.38 by Seahawks’ Shaquem Griffin in 2018.
His tweet gave off the idea that the two could possibly be on the same field together to create a dynamic tandem, but James and Simmons share the same agency (Athletes First), so it was just to show kudos for the phenomenal feat.
Nonetheless, Simmons likely caught the attention of the Chargers, who have the No. 6 overall selection in the draft. Like James, SimmonsΒ is a true chess piece on the defensive side of the ball. He can blitz, play the run, cover in the slot and play special teams.
UFC on ESPN+ 27 results: Deiveson Figueiredo TKOs Joseph Benavidez, but title stays vacant
Deiveson Figueiredo scored an impressive victory on Saturday, but because he missed weight Friday, he doesn’t take home the gold.
[vertical-gallery id=495544]
There was a decisive victor in the main event of UFC on ESPN+ 27 on Saturday, but there still is no flyweight champion.
[autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag] earned the biggest victory of his career when he scored a second-round technical knockout of [autotag]Joseph Benavidez[/autotag] in a bout that was supposed to crown a new 125-pound champion in Norfolk, Va.
But Figueiredo missed weight Friday, coming in at 127.5, two-and-a-half pounds over the championship weight limit. As such, while Benadivez (28-6 MMA, 15-4 UFC), who made weight, would have won the title with a victory, Figueiredo earned the victory, but not the belt, as the title remains vacant.
“I am sorry for missing weight, but I told everybody I want to give a big show because you guys deserve a big main event,” Figueiredo (17-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) said through an interpreter.
The fight was fun while it lasted. The opening round was a wild mix of technical wizardry and flat-out brawling. Figueiredo scored a takedown and transitioned through several submission attempts on the ground. But Benavidez managed to roll through all of them and scramble back to his feet.
From there, a firefight broke out. Benaidez got the better of things throughout the rest of the round, as he landed effective combos and then usually managed to dart out of range before his Brazilian foe could counter.
[lawrence-related id=495135,495454,495132]
It was more of the same in the second round, but Benavidez got a little reckless in his approach. There was an accidental clash of heads during an exchange, which immediately opened a big cut on Benavidez’s forehead. Figueiredo pounced and landed a body shot, followed by a wicked right hand which dropped him. Figueiredo was starting to land bombs on his grounded for before the fight was called off at the 1:54 mark.
It was another hard-luck title fight loss for Benavidez, who dropped a split decision to Dominick Cruz in a WEC bantamweight title fight and a pair of fights to former UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson.
“I feel like this isn’t real right now,”Benavidez said. “A freakin’ nightmare.”
With his 15th career win via finish, Figueiredo has now won three in a row. Benavidez had a three-fight winning streak snapped.
The vacant flyweight title bout was the UFC on ESPN+ 27 mainΒ event at Chartway Arena in Norfolk, Va. It streamed on ESPN+.

Watch: Mike Mayock and Paul Guenther lose it watching Isaiah Simmons run a blazing 4.39 40
Watch: Mike Mayock and Paul Guenther lose it watching Isaiah Simmons run a blazing 4.39 40
It’s pretty much a lock now that Isaiah Simmons is going in the top ten of the draft. He’s probably going top five. The Clemson linebacker just ran a blazing 4.39 40.
As Daniel Jeremiah said “That’s not normal. And as the NFL Network guys like to do, they caught their old longtime draft analyst Mike Mayock reacting to Simmons’s 40 along with Paul Guenther he couldn’t help himself but just burst out laughing, probably mostly at the Mayock’s reaction and partly out of sheer astonishment himself.
We see you, @isaiahsimmons25
My goodness, do we see you. pic.twitter.com/ZZc9JB70He
— Rich Eisen (@richeisen) March 1, 2020
We’re talking about a 6-3 5/8, 238-pound human. A defender. And he’s running like a wide receiver. Simmons plays linebacker, but he could probably play one of many positions on the defense, including safety.
Mayock mentioned Simmons unprompted in his combine press conference earlier this week, essentially saying he is just a great football player, regardless of position.
βI think more and more defenses around the league are saying βwho are the guys that you donβt necessarily have to put a label on that are dynamic football players. And, you know, Isaiah Simmons has played on the back end, heβs played at linebacker, heβs come off the edge. And really the only limitations on him are whatever the defensive coordinator puts on him.β
The Raiders sit at No. 12 overall which means there’s little doubt if they want Simmons, they’d have to trade up to get him.
