Versatility is key for Hightower’s draft prospect

Boise State wide receiver and returner John Hightower will be a get for any NFL team that takes a chance on him. Hightower is a versatile playmaker in multiple aspects of the game in running, receiving and returning the ball. In all three of those phases he is capable of scoring a touchdown.

The awards he won included being a second-team wide receiver and also returner in 2019. He acclimated himself nicely to just two years playing at the FBS level. He arguably is the most versatile pro prospect as a wide receiver for the Broncos.

Strengths

He is fast with a 4.43-second yard 40 but he also has a burst of speed to beat defenders off the ball and using that little bit of extra to get past defenders for downfield passes. He also uses that trait in the return game and running the ball to make sharp cuts and can be elusive on those type of plays.

In addition to having the ability to get open, Hightower does a great job of tracking the ball and makes quarterbacks look real good by getting to the ball if it is thrown off the mark.

Weaknesses

Hightower needs to add a bit of weight to his 189-pound frame so that he can avoid being tackled so easily. Add about 10 pounds and he can get those extra yards time after time. While he catches the ball nicely in stride and on deep passes, the balls that are outside of his body are not as consistently caught compared to ones that are directly on target and in his chest.

Also, his route running over the middle and non-vertical passes is something he needs to work on to become a really, really good receiver.

Draft Projection

He is considered about at top-150 prospect and could go anywhere from a fourth to fifth-round pick.
