Round 3 | No. 86 | RB Zack Moss

Grade: A

Moss’ name was connected to the Bills in many mock drafts leading up to tonight’s pick, likely because it was reported he met with the team multiple times during the pre-draft process. One of the few voids on the Bills roster was at the running back position, where they needed a complement to Devin Singletary in the backfield. Moss is now the frontrunner for that role.

Moss had three consecutive 1,000-yard-plus seasons in Utah. He scored 36 rushing touchdowns during his three years in full-time starting duty for the Utes.

Moss is a one-cut, downhill runner who has size to punish defenders who get in his way. He broke 53 tackles last year, among the best in FBS football. While he’s not necessarily a burner, running a 4.65-second 40 time at the combine, Moss has enough quickness to break away from defenders. He does nicely in pass protection; he’s size makes him difficult to move when protecting the passer. He also contributes to the pass game out of the backfield. While the numbers aren’t gaudy with receptions, Moss can be a viable option in on third down if he improves just a bit in that area. Singletary himself massive improved as a pass catcher as a rookie.

This is the ideal pick for the Bills to supplement their offense at this point. Moss can contribute in all facet so of the offensive game early on in his career. In addition, Moss can spell Singletary when necessary.
