With their second-round pick, No. 36 overall, in the 2020 NFL Draft, the New York Giants select Alabama safety Xavier McKinney.
The Giants had been rumored to seek a trade-up in the second round, likely for McKinney, but that didn’t materialize and they landed a much-needed prospect anyway.
With McKinney, the Giants get a quality all-around safety who can play in the box, in centerfield, and even in the nickle. He’s a tremendous compliment to Jabrill Peppers and shored up another position that had a question mark attached to it.
Here is what our friends at Draft Wire had to say about McKinney:
Xavier McKinney is a top two safety in this class with his ability to play all over the defense. Some have referred to him as a poor man’s Minkah Fitzpatrick. Maybe it is the crimson jersey that he wears on Saturdays, but definitely see that in his game.
With the Giants, McKinney will come in and compete, likely earning the starting job out of the gate.
