A breakout star who could turn more heads in 2020.

It can be shockingly easy to overlook strong individual seasons on a team having a down year, but the next player on our countdown of Mountain West football’s top athletes definitely deserves your attention heading into this fall.

Jacobi Hearn was one of the numerous junior college imports that Bob Davie brought to New Mexico as part of his 2019 recruiting class, starring at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College before his arrival in Albuquerque. He made his presence known almost immediately for the Lobos, sealing a season-opening win over Sam Houston State with a drive-killing sack late in the fourth quarter, and continued to do so throughout the fall, finishing the year with ten tackles for loss and a team-high six sacks. That latter number put him in a tie for fourth among all Mountain West defenders.

Though it remains to be seen how his responsibilities will differ now that new head coach Danny Gonzales and defensive coordinator Rocky Long are at the helm, you can count on the fact that they’ll enjoy figuring out how to deploy such a dynamic chess piece.
